There are two things in this life that Gus Brannock truly loves; his family and his job. His family is growing and he wants what his brother and sister have before the job he’s worked so hard for takes its toll. The woman he’s got his eye on, however, isn’t interested in being with a man who risks his life every day. When the unexpected friendship with the sassy red head he used to hate turns into something Gus just doesn’t want to live without, he will do whatever it takes to have her. The hazards of his job as a detective for missing children may end up proving to be too much, but there’s a reason Aiden was brought into his life and nothing will stand in his way to keep her there.

Aiden Murphy used to hate the handsome jerk next door until a surprising discovery spun her world in another direction. Her life of devotion to her sister and niece has been her biggest strength with the exception of her art. That is, until Gus turns out to be the one thing that has been missing from that life all along. Aiden must decide if the unknown is worth the risk of loving the dedicated detective or if being pulled into his world is more than she can handle. When Gus becomes the only way for her to keep the people she loves most safe, will she understand why he treasures her untried strength or will she let her fear of the unknown decide for her?

For readers 18+ due to strong language and sexual situations.

About The Author:

Jessica Wilde

I live in Morgan Utah with my husband, daughter, and dog, Kolo. I write as often as my active daughter will let me and my husband has the patience of a saint. I find inspiration from dreams, people I meet, and life experiences. When I write, I usually end up drinking one too many cans of Peace Tea, eating three too many Fruit by the Foot fruit snacks, and accidently kicking my pup and best buddy, Kolo, too many times since he loves to sleep under my desk at my feet.
I started writing as a teen, but my fear of the unknown won out every time and I threw everything out. After becoming a mother and deciding to stay at home to raise my beautiful little girl, I tried again when I couldn’t stop thinking of ideas. I loved every minute, every hour of sleep lost, and every character that came to life in my mind.
It’s strange, but my favorite moments are when I have writer’s block because I can turn to my husband and find inspiration through him by just doing what we do best together. Talking, laughing, and just being in love. He doesn’t like to read, but he never stops encouraging me to keep going.
Writing has become an important part of my life and every book has a special place in my heart.

Spotlight: Beyond Reality Series 2 – Flaming Hearts by Susan Stoker

Becky and her mom used to watch reality shows together all the time. Her mom passed away before she could see Becky on her very own show…except it’s not her own show. She has to share the limelight with another woman. They’re both competing for the love and attention of the same men. It was like no show Becky had ever seen… and she was miserable. The best thing about the show was trying to irritate the other woman by choosing activities Becky knew she’d hate. Becky had no idea she’d meet a wonderful, protective man while on the show, unfortunately he wasn’t a contestant.

Dean always knew he’d find the one woman meant for him, but he had no idea he’d find her competing on a reality show. He’d have to find a way to make sure she didn’t choose any of the prospects on the show, but would decide to be with him instead. Luckily his brother was a cameraman; it was just the key to get to spend time with Becky, as long as the Director didn’t catch wind of their plans.

Becky can’t believe Dean would be interested in her; after all, she isn’t anything special. For some reason he keeps coming back to see her and wants to talk to her every night on the phone. Their relationship becomes more solid just as Becky’s time on the show becomes more tense. She’s ready to call it quits, but she has a contract.

Dean and Becky are counting the days until the reality show is over and they can spend time together openly when Dean gets called away on a job. When an incident on the show threatens her safety and Dean isn’t around for her to turn to, Becky isn’t sure their relationship can survive. Becky has to figure out a way to trust Dean to help her, and Dean will do whatever it takes for Becky to realize she’s his…forever.

Becky didn’t like Marissa all that much, but she couldn’t help but be impressed with her memory of all the men’s names.

Becky didn’t want to make someone go home solely based on what they looked like, as that wasn’t the type of person she was, but Marissa seemed to know who she wanted, and since none of the men really stood out in her eyes, she’d agree, but with conditions.

“You know you just chose eleven guys to stay when really you only get to choose seven, right?” She waited for Marissa to nod and then continued. “But since I don’t know any of them that well, I’ll let you have more than your fair share this time. But if in the future I want to negotiate, you’ll let me.”

Happy that she’d gotten her way Marissa beamed at Becky and agreed. They walked back out into the main room to let the men know who would stay and who would go.

Robert lined all the men up in the typical way these things were done on reality shows, into two lines with nine men in each line. They had a platform set up so the men in back were standing taller than the men in front. Becky and Marissa stood across from the men with Robert in between them.

“Welcome to Arizona Reality!” Robert boomed, arms spread wide. Becky inwardly cringed. Who the hell came up with the names of these shows? It sounded like they were selling a house or something.

Robert continued dramatically, “Hopefully you had a good time tonight getting to know each other. Becky, Marissa, you will each get the chance to have seven men stay to compete for your affections. Unfortunately, four of you men will be leaving tonight. Marissa, we’ll start with you. Who do you want to stay tonight and get to know you better?”

Marissa, in her glory, beamed and dramatically stepped forward to give her speech. “I had such a good time tonight,” she gushed, “I’m so happy to meet all of you. This is such a hard decision! If it was up to me I’d have all of you stay so I could get to know you better, but unfortunately that’s impossible.” Marissa pouted prettily. She named seven of the men she wanted to stay, pausing dramatically between each name.

When it was Becky’s turn she felt her stomach turn. There were eleven men looking intensely at her. She really didn’t want to have to disappoint any of them. She tried hard to remember who the men were that Becky wanted to keep and didn’t mention. It was easier to remember the names of the men who weren’t staying.

“Uh, Like Marissa said this choice was really hard. I enjoyed meeting all of you and I wasn’t sure how to decide who I wanted to stay and who I wanted to go as I don’t really know any of you.” Seeing the impatient looks on the remaining men’s faces she decided to hurry and get this over with. This part of the show definitely sucked. She didn’t like it when people were mad at her, and she was definitely going to make four of these men unhappy. Becky turned toward the men and rushed through the seven names, hoping she had them right, but knowing even if she didn’t, it wouldn’t make much difference to her. Marissa might care, but she didn’t. “John, Conner, Dexter, Joel, James, Patrick and Samuel.”

Becky and Marissa both jumped as Robert boomed as soon as Becky finished saying Samuel’s name. “The choice has been made!”

“What the hell?” Becky heard Carter say unbelievably. “This show sucks.” He snarled the words and stepped off the platform toward the front door of the huge house. He wrenched the door open and actually slammed it behind him like he was three years old.

“You look nervous,” he says. His hand, still in my hair, turns to my cheek. It’s warm. Smells good. “Come and sit down.”

He takes my hand and leads me to a window seat. A built-in bench, pressed up against a wall of glass. He wraps his hands around my waist and lifts me up. Sits me down up there. My eyes scan the patchy, dirt-strewn yard outside. The way the rain smashes off the ground and into something else. The sky is white. Stark white.

“Just a minute,” he says.

My mind screams as he steps away. He reaches onto some shelves along the wall and grabs an armful of navy blue blankets. Painters’ blankets, I realize as he holds them out for me. He sits them on the bench beside me. Smooths one out. Lifts me up and sits me on it. Then he tucks another one behind me.

“Thank you,” I murmur. Despite the blankets’ tattered appearance, they seem soft enough. There’s no paint on them, and they don’t smell like it. Another one unfolded by his big hands, tucked around me.

“You got wet. Warm up a moment.”

I sit there because my brain is broken and my heart feels puffed up like a balloon.

He climbs up behind me and gently nudges me forward. He leans his torso up against mine, spreads his legs around my butt and thighs. Strong hands begin to knead my shoulders.

“Don’t be nervous here, Angel. I’ll take care of you. Always.”

Spotlight: Hell Yeah! #4 – Welcome to my World by Sable Hunter

Continue the Hell Yeah! Series with book 14

The first time Bowie Travis Malone laid eyes on Cassie Cartwright, she knocked him for a loop. He was as drawn to her side as a moth to a flame. A green eyed angel with golden hair, she made his heart hammer in his chest and his body ache to hold her close. But the moment he asks her to dance, the truth of her condition almost brings him to his knees – Cassie is in a wheelchair.
Cassie is used to men passing her by, they can’t see beyond the handicap that defines her boundaries. When she sees Bowie walking across the room toward her, she thinks he is the sexiest man in the world and once they talk, she realizes he is as kind and smart as he is handsome. She dreads the moment when he asks her to dance and she has to tell him she can’t.
Their first meeting seals their fate. Both are drawn to each other by threads that fate wove long ago. Bowie realizes he wants Cassie above all others, and thinks she is perfect – just the way she is. Cassie is afraid to dream that he might be able to see something in her that no one else ever has.
Love, desire, and affection draw them together but reality may shatter their dreams. The tragic accident that put Cassie in a wheelchair will come back to haunt them. And when Bowie realizes he was the one responsible – nothing will ever be the same. He will begin a quest to build a world where Cassie will feel cherished and welcome – if only she will be able to forgive.

“Bowie, I don’t think—”
“Dammit!” Bowie stood up.
He was leaving. Cassie bowed her head and wiped her hands on her dress. It was for the best. Then, she looked up and got a big surprise. Lord, the man could move fast. One moment he was sitting about three feet away, the next he was crouched by her chair and had his hand cupped around Cassie’s cheek. “You’re wrong. There is a need.” Gently, firmly, with predatory grace, he lowered his head until their lips almost touched.
He could feel her tremble beneath his touch. God help, she was beautiful. If Bowie was right, it had been a long time since she’d kissed a man. Her eyes widened, as if she didn’t quite know what to expect. Cassie watched his every move. Sweet Jesus, he needed to do this just right. “I want this so much. I’m aching for your kiss. Do you want me?”
Did she want him? Was he kidding? She was certain all he saw when he looked at her was the chair. And here he was telling her that he ached for her kiss? Could she believe him? Bowie was so aware of her. The smooth curve of her face, the long luscious locks of hair which framed her body like Rapunzel and breasts so lush and perfect he had to fight himself to keep from touching them to see if they were as soft as they appeared. He wanted her. Simple. Just like the first time he’d seen her, he wanted her so much the need made him weak. Moving closer to her, he asked her again. The uncertainty in her eyes hurt Bowie. “You have me on a slow burn, baby. Do you want me, Cassie?”
“Desperately,” she breathed.
He drew closer, taking control, holding her face as he slanted his lips across hers. She trembled, her breath hitching, nervous and gasping for air. Bowie gave her what she needed, sharing his breath as he leaned nearer, deepening the kiss. Perfect. That was all he could think. She was absolutely perfect and so sweet. Currents of electricity swept through his body. Any reservations he’d harbored were forgotten for the moment. Her mouth was addictive and her seeming innocence an irresistible attraction. His hunger drove him to dip his tongue into the honeyed recesses of her mouth. Velvet. Tenderly he rubbed his lips over hers, licking, teasing, coaxing Cassie to trust him enough to kiss him back.
At last she let out a ragged little moan and he felt her delicate hands take hold of his shoulder, clutching the material of his shirt in her slender fingers. Bowie felt an immense satisfaction when she leaned forward, giving herself over to him to support and hold. As he accepted her weight, a feeling of absolute contentment came over him. Cassie felt so right in his arms, so welcome. Her soft skin seemed to singe his everywhere they touched. Bowie trembled, he fuckin’ trembled. Never had he felt anything like this before.
Needing more, he wrapped an arm around her, carefully easing her closer. Every instinct told him to pick her up but he was afraid he’d hurt her. At first she’d been reticent, but now she opened for him, her tongue timidly darting over his in their first erotic dance. Bowie groaned his satisfaction.
She answered him with a moan of her own, a quiet vibration of ecstasy deep in her throat which absolutely electrified him. He slid his hand from her face to the nape of her neck, holding her in place. A primal need to master, to exert his male power took his breath away. He had no desire to hurt, rather he wanted to protect, possess and control.
Bowie longed to memorize every facet of her body by learning it inch by sweet inch. He wanted to mark her as his own. Touch. Heat. Desire. Those things were taking precedence over coherent thought. Bowie was acting on compulsion when he placed his hand on her side, skimming her waist. So soft. So fuckin’ perfect. He allowed his palm to learn her body, the delicate shape, the gentle curves. With every touch, he felt her respond with tiny trembles and whimpers, revealing to him that she was as enthralled in what they were doing as he was. And when she threaded those dainty fingers in his hair, he could feel her longing conveyed to him through every fiber of her being.
Bowe’s fingers inched upward until he grazed the lower swell of her breast, the generous warm globe beckoning his touch. He wanted to cup her softness more than he wanted to take another breath of air. All he could think of was molding and kneading the feminine flesh until he had her asking him to replace his fingers with his lips. God, he could make her feel so good. She would love how he could make her feel. And he wanted to hear her begging, the desperation to please her tore at his heart. Cassie. Sweet Cassie.

****** Blurb******

Love at first sight? Travis Ross didn’t believe in it until he laid his eyes on a mysterious brunette across the room at a party. From the very first word out of her mouth, Travis is smitten by this feisty little girl with the one letter name. Just back from Mexico, Travis’ mystery girl is full of surprises, some exquisite and some not so nice, but no matter what fate throws at them, Travis is determined to keep them together, determined to win her heart and make sure she’s happy to be stuck with him forever. Find out what happened before J got her closet.

“I wanna hear the rest of that song you were playing earlier,” J said absentmindedly as she ran a fingertip over the edge of a row of cereal boxes. We’d wandered into a small market. I wasn’t exactly sure what kind of store we’d walked into, but it looked like the kind of place my dad would have come to buy a twenty dollar, organic peach he could brag about later. I wasn’t that familiar with this part of town, but the expensive suits that roamed the aisles with women who looked like the only bad habit they had was Louis Vuitton, made me think we’d walked into a yuppie supermarket. I took my phone out and pulled Huey back up. “You mean, you want to hear the rest of our song.” I couldn’t help myself. The idea that J and I had our own song, had me smiling from ear to ear and her face glowed radiant when she smiled back at me. She took my free hand in hers. “Can I hear it?” “Hear what?” She squeezed my hand and nibbled on her bottom lip. “Our song.” A blast of ice ran across my spine and I shook my arms out. I pulled J into me.” Say it again.” “What? Our song?” I collapsed to the ground. “Travis!” J shrieked and kneeled beside me. “Are you okay?” I kept my eyes closed and hit the play button on my phone. Huey was back. I sang the first few lines from the floor, eyes still closed. “You know what this song is, right?” “Huey something and the news?” J said from above me. I opened my eyes. “It’s our song.” I sat up on an elbow and pulled J awkwardly in for a kiss. She rocked on her feet and almost fell over. “Travis.” God, I loved the way my name sounded rolling off her lips. “Our song,” I said and bounded up. I cranked the volume as loud as I could and Huey echoed in the store. A nerdy kid wearing a blue smock appeared at the end of the aisle and leered at us. I held the phone up to him. “Know what this is, kid?” “No,” he responded. I put my arm around J. “It’s our song.” I motioned with a finger, back and forth at J and myself. “Okay,” the nerdy kid said. “It’s not your song,” I said. “It’s not his song.” I pointed to a guy on his phone. “It’s our song.” I motioned to J and myself again. Phone guy looked J up and down and then into my eyes. “Yeah. She’s with me, Pal. Back to your call you go.” Was I taunting them a bit? Maybe. Being obnoxious? Oh, for sure, but my head was swimming. I felt ten feet tall. Fuck that! I felt a hundred and ten feet tall with J on my arm, so maybe I was being a little cocky, but when you had a girl who made you feel the way J made me feel, you were allowed to be that way.
Rarely will you find Ryan O’Leary in a state of rest; if he’s not on the ice or kicking around a soccer ball, he’s plotting his next story or out on the town with friends. His fun and flirty nature makes it possible for him to write the kind of romance that makes the reader both smile and tingle.

Spotlight: Portrait of Gray by Palessa

Continue the Baxter Family Saga with book 2

Grayson Baxter, first born of Julian and Joan, has always been the prodigal of the Baxter clan. He has also been heavily into drugs since he was a teenager. As his brother Cass enters a new phase in his life and is headed towards taking over the family business, Grayson’s drug use worsens. When he attempts to break away from the family that hates him, something goes terribly wrong. After tragedy strikes and with the help of a unique rehab facility, Grayson gets his life back. He discovers and pursues his desire to become a therapist and fall in love with Bindi Gail. Just as they start a life together, one fateful decision tears them apart. Through life’s twists and turns he finds his way from lost to found and learns to love again, Grayson’s journey to survive and realize his path as a Baxter makes his redemption more satisfying.

It was the day of Cass’ return and even though the house seemed quiet, there was a little bit of a spark in the air. Julian was planning to have a party the next day, inviting some of the most elite of Gables society to show off his son. As Grayson walked downstairs to the pool, he met his father coming out of the home office.

“Grayson,” Julian began, “Cass will be in late tonight. We’re planning to have breakfast tomorrow at the Biltmore. Can you possibly make it a priority to show up on time?”

Grayson grinned. “What’s the matter, Father? Afraid I’ll be fashionably late and upset the golden boy?”

Julian looked at his son steadily, unsmiling. He had no idea what he needed to do to get to Grayson, but one day he vowed he would before it was too late. Grayson looked at his father and then looked away. He hated being stared at, especially by the inscrutable Julian Baxter who saw everything and said little.

Grayson sighed and shook his head. “Fine.” He could never get the better of the old man and there was no use in wasting time. Giving him one last look, Julian walked away. Grayson ambled to the patio and made a mental note to call Jerry. He needed a little extra boost to last him through his brother’s return.

Grayson jumped in one of the cars and headed over to Jerry’s place. He desperately needed a hit of something to take the edge off, and the only place he’d get some peace to enjoy it was outside of the manor.

“And then he looked at me and I just stood there,” Grayson said as he took a hit of the weed.

“At least he gives a shit,” Jerry replied. “Mine was too busy beating the shit out my mother and me to even say ‘boo.’ He blamed my mother for his sorry state. She worked her fingers to the bone and when she got pregnant, he beat her so bad she lost the baby. Then blamed her for it.”

“Damn, man.” Grayson was stunned. Grayson had known Jerry for over ten years and he rarely talked about his family life. It was only when they were in college that he learned Jerry’s father was dead and his mother was in jail, but he never knew why.

“The day my mother offed my father was the happiest day of my life.” Jerry stared unblinking at nothing and Grayson could see the grip his memories held him in. “She’d just had enough of the beating, the screaming, the yelling…and she decided it as time.” Grayson sat and listened. His life was a fairytale in comparison, and for a moment he felt like a brat. “But my mom was smart.” Jerry leaned over and looked at Grayson with a smile on his face. “She’d gotten a special insurance policy on my father and made me the beneficiary. She set it up special so that when my father died, I’d be taken care of and the money wouldn’t be spent willy-nilly by my uncle.” Jerry nodded, tapping his forefinger on his temple. “She set up some trust or whatever that paid for school and books and college. She set aside some money to pay my uncle to take care of me, but she did what she thought she needed to do.”

Grayson listened and wondered if Joan would have ever done anything like that for him or any of his siblings. He didn’t even have to answer because he already knew and it made him sick.

Palessa started reading her first romance novel, at the age of 11. Then she got introduced to V.C. Andrews, Barbara Taylor Bradford, Anne Rice and many more notable contemporary authors as well as some of the classics, A Tale of Two Cities, Their Eyes Were Watching God, The Great Gatsby and others. It was during her teenage years that she dabbled in writing. First, it was in her diaries, then she started creating characters, stories about romance, the supernatural and much more. Being an I.B. student as well as entering college, left little time for writing and so she put it and the ideas aside to pursue a career. It would take almost 20 years, a radical move from the city she grew up in, Miami, FL back to her Caribbean birthplace, and a chance Facebook meeting with Sable Hunter to start the juices flowing again. After some fits and starts, the Baxter Family Saga was born. Unchained Hearts is Palessa’s first published fiction book with Beau Coup Publishing. She considers herself just a storyteller that sees no reason to shy away from the juicier romantic elements. She currently lives in the mountains of Jamaica with her crazy, cracker-munching-mutt Ivy and a farm, primarily managed by agribusiness partner, also known as Dad.

Review: Bad as in Good by J. Lovelace

Amazon – Goodreads

Teeming with dramatic plot twists and wickedly delightful erotic frills, a passionate story about two lovers struggling with heartbreak, heartthrobs, and self-fulfillment.

Many of us fall into unrelenting cycles that lead us to inevitable heartbreak—a knee-weakening, nearly unbearable period of withdrawal where we curse our indiscretions and promise to do better next time. But why? Why do we do this to ourselves?

That’s the question Erin is constantly asking herself.

Along for the ride is Tariq, a young man battling his past as well. While their romantic lives intertwine, they find it almost impossible to break free of the merciless beast that is love and its ugly stepsister, heartbreak.

At first, Erin’s attraction to Tariq is like a drug addiction she can’t ignore, but as drama ensues and the ugly past comes back to visit, both Tariq and Erin realize how bad—as in good—love truly is.

4 STARS!!!!

Bad as in Good starts with a bang and keeps you engrossed from page one. This book has drama like no other. Drama that will keep you wanting to know what will happen next. Throw in some good sex and you’ve got a winner.

I wasn’t sure how I felt about Erin. Some spots I liked her and some I didn’t. Going back to Tariq time and time again drove me nuts. But when her feelings for him were explained, I got it. Erin is a strong independent woman just wanting a man to treat her right. She found a man to steal her heart only he had some issues of his own that prevented their relationship. She tried moving on which seemed to be difficult at times.

Tariq is a man scorned by a woman in his past. Not once but twice and the second one was still going on. He couldn’t seem to catch a break with love. I felt for him, for all he went through. I got how he could be a little reluctant to trust women. But though mean and disrespectful to Erin at first, she really got to him. I actually like Tariq a lot. I was rooting for him to straighten up the whole book.

Then comes Louis. I never cared for Louis. He irked me from the get go. Then the thing with Teona. Omg that girl drove me nuts and the fact that Louis had anything to do with her made me think even less of him. Louis just seemed off.

In the end I loved how things played out. I was happy to see Erin stand up for herself and her life.

The Key to the gate walks the earth in the form of a woman…young, innocent and completely unaware of her importance in the battle between good and evil. Once her blood is shed, Zillah can open the portal to release her father…Lucifer himself.
Cara, a college sophomore, is quickly thrown into the world of the supernatural, as well as learning of her true ancestry. Vampires, werewolves and the Nephilim are now a part of her reality. As the beings struggle to protect her, she fights to keep her sanity as her mortal realm is crushed.
Secrets are revealed that could shatter Cara’s new found love, as well as lead to her ultimate death. A family is torn apart as the battle to save the key leads them down a road of betrayal and heartache. Loved ones are lost, lines are crossed, and nothing is as it seems. Lies and truths twist and turn, leaving us with only one question…
Could you sacrifice the one you love to save the world?

The evening sky pulsed, hues of deep purples and blacks engraving blurry lines above the earth. The night echoed its cries, carried by angry breezes through the hills of the land. The cemetery, cascaded in carved tombstones that sprouted from the ground, laid empty and dormant, except for the busy, yet silent whispers of the dead.
The ground, wet and damp, gave way beneath Cara’s bare feet as she trudged through the mud pushing between her toes. Her eyes traveled towards the ground to study her soiled feet, finding her body was draped in a simple, yet elegant white dress which graced her pale legs just below her knees. The plunging neckline stopped just beneath the cleft of her breast as the thin silk straps hugged the tops of her shoulders, exposing her bare delicate skin.
She scanned around her, alone and frightened, like a young child strayed from its mother. It was so dark, and the crested moon, swarmed by rolling darkened clouds, offered no safe haven of light to guide her way. Slow and unsure, she stepped cautiously, waiting blindly for an edge that would send her spiraling down into a never-ending abyss, swallowing her whole. The shadows danced in front of her, playing tricks on her unfocused eyes as her feet took her step by step.
Where was she? How did she get here? She could hear faint whispers of the dead crying out to her from the spirit world. Their words made no sense as they all jumbled together like a soft but unmelodic hum in the air. Her ears strained to make out parts of the words, hoping to piece together some language so she could better understand why they’d brought her here.
Realization struck. The voices had guided her here. She turned around to where the whispers grew, louder and more needful. She followed them as they increased, vibrating through her head as if they were coming from inside her brain, instead of churning in the air around her. The darkness frightened her, yet she still continued, following the only guidance she had.
She could hear it now. Through the vast echo of the whispers, she could make out her name. They called to her, begged her to come near. She obeyed.
Something hard struck her toes, shooting instant pain up through her legs, like lightning igniting through her to her very core. Her body flew forward as she reached out to stop her fall. She expected a large stone to split her head. Or perhaps the tip of a metal cross would impale her through her chest and end it all, without her knowing or seeing it in the darkness before her. But there was nothing as her body hit the soft ground beneath her.
Grass laced itself through her fingers as she looked up to the gravestone in front of her. The clouds that had hugged the moon so well broke, lighting the etched carvings before her so she could see. What she read on the engraving shook her to the core. Her eyes couldn’t process, couldn’t comprehend what she was seeing.

A cry escaped her lips as Cara pushed herself up from the ground as fast as she could, stumbling backwards. She wanted to turn away, run and never look back. There was no way in hell she was going to stay here to hang out with her own tomb. And the date…it was this Friday’s date…or had it already arrived and was now in the past? Cara realized she had no idea of what time it was, or the day, but she needed to escape and get out of this place as fast as her bare feet could carry her.

Thunder tore through the cabin as the walls trembled against the quaking foundation. Damon grabbed a vampyre by the neck and tossed him through the drywall. His deadly sword quickly followed, piercing directly into the heart of the monster. The blood sucker cried out in pain as it clawed desperately at his attacker. The blade exited. Before the vampyre’s feet could hit the floor, edged steel smoothly creased against his throat, flawlessly severing head from body.
Damon moved quickly through the horde, his weapon swift and true, eliminating numbers of the enemy’s army. One after another, they poured from all crevices of the house, their numbers many, each falling at his feet as they advanced towards him. Decapitated heads rolled at his feet, mouths gaping open, eyes wide with shock. Damon looked around as the whispering movements of the Halflings pressed on. He searched for his wife, hoping for a glimpse of watching her in action. Her movement was intoxicating, and he loved watching her graceful executions.
The sea of heads swarming in the room made it difficult to pick Shannon out. Damon focused, honing his senses as the chaos stilled before him. Using his mind, he slowed the clatter of bodies before him, giving him only a few moments to examine the occupants in the room.
She was nowhere to be found.
His heart contracted, as if an invisible fist had jammed itself inside his rib cage, crushing his beating organ right where he stood. Something wasn’t right and he could feel it. Panic hit as he released the trance on his mind as the battle before him came rushing back to full speed.
“Eamon!” he called out to his twin across the room. “I can’t find Shannon!”
Eamon spun around with his sword, taking out a half circle of vamps out as he did. He pushed through the bodies, scanning and assessing the people around him. Other Halflings made their way through the horde of vamps, each graceful and deadly in their movements, but none being the one he searched for. He could hear Seamus still outside with other warriors, as well as the hellhounds, battling the flocks of minions the queen had stashed about the grounds. He knew she wasn’t out there though. Shannon had come inside with them. He was sure of it. Immediately, his eyes hit the stairs. Muttering under his breath about their plan to “stick together”, he forced his way to the stairway, only to be blocked by another fury of vamps.
Damon’s eyes followed his brother’s. Seeing the opportunity the blockade had given him, he charged without another second to spare. Leaping over enemies, he struck in mid air, taking out foes with the brunt force of his blade. His foot reached the top of the stairs, as he heard the gargled chokes of one desperate for breath. Damon’s heart sank as he came to the entrance of the room, only to see his worst nightmare playing out before his eyes.
Soiled boots struggled and kicked above the ground, as a shattered blade lay in scattered pieces across the wooden floor. The girl’s body shook and quivered in midair as frantic hand store at the vice around her throat. Shannon thrashed against the blackness consuming her as Zillah continued squeezing her like a python constricting its prey.
“Put her down!” Damon ordered as he charged forward.
The Queen’s face peeked around the Shannon’s limp body. Obsidian spheres glared at him, filled with warning. The edges of her lips curled up into a sinister grin, pleased and eager for another visitor.
“Step any closer and I will snap her neck.” Zillah ordered, as he held Shannon to the side. She raised the girl’s body higher and squeezed harder wanting to make sure her point was made.
The sound of fragile bones splintering under the pressure echoed in Damon’s ears. He cringed against the sound of twigs snapping as throttled breath begged for him to stop. His movement ceased as fear washed over, locking his feet to the ground in terror.
“Please!” he begged, surrendering his sword down to the ground. He knew he was going against everything he stood for, everything they had fought for so long, but the thought of losing her…
“Please, let her go. You can have me. Please!” Blood burned under his skin, pulsing violently as it raced with need. The fear of his wife being killed threatened his sanity, as well as his humanity. The demon bitch had found his only weakness. To save her, he would sacrifice his life.
Damon threw his hands up in surrender, his eyes begging in silence for the monster to release his wife. He couldn’t hear the thunderous quaking from downstairs, anymore. The only sound filling his head was that of the labored and shaky breathing of pressing death surrounding him. The seconds ticked by slowly, as an eternity seemed to pass as Damon waited for Zillah to release her clutch.
Shannon’s body fell with a thick thud, lying motionless between them. Weighted misery flooded him, robbing him of his air, and stilling his heart. Dropping to his knees, Damon stared hopelessly at to her unconscious body. Her heartbeat fluttered, barely registering, as her life had already begun slipping away.
Vengeance took hold as rage coursed through him, erupting with murderous intent. The Halfling unsheathed a jagged stake from his ankle as the voltage in his eyes ignited. A feral growl rippled from his chest as Damon leapt at the vampyre queen.
