Spotlight and Interview: Double Booked by CJ Anaya

Double booked

Analise is on assignment to prove or disprove a haunting, but her unexpected roommate is tall, dark and dangerous…and he has her in his sights.

The gorgeous warlock behind me placed a comforting hand on my left shoulder while circling around to my right, resting his other arm on the counter. The slightly intimate position should have been reserved for couples, something we were most definitely not!

So much for avoiding him. I couldn’t figure out if my body wanted to panic or purr.

“Excuse me, young lady.” He caught the blonde’s attention right away.

Oh, that voice. I felt a part of my body relax and another part of me tense as its velvety tones washed over me.

He continued. “I sometimes find that places such as these make the annoying mistake of double booking rooms during holidays in case of future cancellations. Could you simply do a search under…what is your name miss?”

I had to turn into him a little to meet his questioning look. The close contact, combined with the way his magic seemed to make a tentative grab for me made me tingle inside.

“Analise Lavelle.”

He smiled. “Lovely.” Then he turned back to the receptionist. “Could you do a search for Analise Lavelle, please?”

The rich baritone of his voice and the tender manner in which he made the request had the receptionist clicking away at that keyboard faster than I could down a cheeseburger.

I was doing my best not to react to the strange power within this man’s core. Magic was generally something that remained inactive until its master wielded it. This man’s magic seemed to have a mind of its own, attempting to draw me in as if it wanted to have a conversation with me…get to know me better.

You are insane, Analise. Just keep it together for a few more minutes.

While I gave myself a mental pep talk, the receptionist continued her frantic search. Every now and then she glanced up, giving the warlock a shy smile— something that earned several eye rolls from me—and then continued with her clicking and clacking. The sound drove home the relentless pounding in my cranium.

The handsome foreigner continued to remain right behind me, with his arms and body encircling my figure and his inner core of magic throwing wispy tendrils of welcome my way.

“Ah, here it is. We did double book the room, Ms. Lavelle, and it doesn’t look like the gentleman who shares the same reservation with you has canceled.”

She said it like it was a good thing.

“Gentleman? What gentleman?”

“A Mr. Miguel Galvez.” She squinted at the screen for a second. “Yep, it looks as if we put you both in the same suite.”

The man behind me let out a low chuckle that rumbled through his chest, warming my back, not to mention my heart strings. I needed to get out of here before I killed the receptionist and kissed the foreigner.

“What is so funny?” I asked. My voice came out more strained than I cared to admit. I mentally batted away a pesky tug from that weird inner magic this guy held.

“It’s just interesting how things work. You see, my name is Miguel Galvez.”

~What are you currently working on?

I just turned in book 3 in The Healer Series to my publisher, and I’m working on a contemporary romance called Marry Your Billionaire. It’s support to be a spoof off of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette.

~What writing advice do you have for aspiring authors?

I would advise authors to curb that need to edit what they are working on until they have finished their first rough draft. It’s tempting to edit and rewrite that first chapter without continuing forward, but you’ll find yourself unable to get past the first chapter if you do that. Don’t edit your thoughts or your words until everything is on the table. Then you can go back and rework your manuscript.

~Are you an organized author or scattered?

I’m getting more organized with every book I write. The first book was a mess simply because I didn’t understand my process. I hadn’t figured out what worked best for me. The more organized you are, the less time you waste trying to find papers you’ve written notes on about dialogue, possible scenes or any outlines you’ve made. Character sheets, plot sheets and note cards for story boarding are going to be your friends in all of this.

~Do you plot out your story or write as it goes?

I do a bit of both. I always have the beginning, middle and ending where I want it, but there are many times when outlines get thrown out the window because something else occurs to me when I’m in the moment.

~Do you have any strange writing habits?

I tend to write down things when I do dishes. All of that staring at soapy water makes me start thinking about scene orchestration and dialogue. So strange, but that’s what happens.

~Do you have writers block and how do you work around it?

I don’t think writer’s block exists. If you have your story outlined, with scenes organized and characters fairly fleshed out then you should have a good idea of what you’re doing and where you’re going. I only get blocked when I haven’t developed the story like I should have before I started writing. Then I wonder what should happen next and get stuck simply because I didn’t take the time to plot it out beforehand. It just takes that extra time to develop the hows and whys. I highly recommend doing it so you don’t find yourself stuck.

~Do you work on 1 story at a time or multiples?

I work on other stories when I’m editing something, and then I devote all of my time to those other stories while I wait for that other book to be edited and published.

~What is your favorite genre to read?

I love romance novels, especially historical romance and paranormal romance.

~What is the most wacky/crazy weird thing you received from a fan?

The only thing I’ve ever received from fans are hugs. LOL It was weird to get hugged by a random fifty-year-old man though.

~What are your favorite hobbies?

I love to sing, write songs, dance, do yoga, binge watch The Mindy Project and binge eat chocolate. Date night’s with my hubby and play time with my kids is great too.

~If you had a warning label what would it say?

Warning: No Filter Here!

~Favorite quote?

My therapist told me the way to achieve true inner peace is to finish what I start. So far I’ve finished two bags of M&Ms and a chocolate cake. I feel better already. Dave Barry

What happened next, she would look back on as the low blow that was her final straw. Just a little before lunchtime the following day, the most delicious tangy sweet smell hit her hard. She came out and saw a man in a puff chef’s hat in front of two circular hot plates. He ladled some white liquid onto one of the plates and carefully spread it out with a flat edge.
Crap! Crêpes.
She loved crêpes.
Tobey Fine had decided to play dirty and he was not going to get away with it.
She grabbed her phone and called him.
Tobey was just finishing up his set when he heard his phone dance on the bench.
CarmTech. Niveah. Allowing himself to enjoy what he thought was a small victory, he smiled and let it ring for another second before answering.
“Three days,” he spouted.
Taken aback by something other than a ‘hello,’ Niveah responded, “What?”
“It took you three days to call me back. Flowers then lunch from your favorite supermarket deli. You are not easy.”
“My favorite—how the hell did you—” Blake Allan Berrios was a dead man. “I’m going to kill him until he dies.”
“Now that’s not nice.” Tobey was enjoying the frustration he was hearing on the other end of the line.
“What do you want, Tobey?”
“A do-over,” he replied.
“What is this, middle school? You can’t undo that. It doesn’t work that way.”
“Okay, then I want to make it up to you. Properly.”
“Why?” Niveah’s voice was more tender than she meant it to be. A part of her had dreamed that he would say those words but when the moment had come, she didn’t trust it or the man saying it. Seven years was a long time and she wasn’t about to make it easy for him to see how much she wanted this. “Why do you want to make it up to me? It’s over and done. You made it clear and I got the message. So why this?”
Tobey sighed. He heard her tough words and it made him proud for some reason. But underneath all of that, something in her voice was challenging him to prove himself, his intentions. He decided he was up to the challenge. “Because while it took you three days to call me back, you could have just said nothing at all. That means I have a chance to say I’m sorry for what I did and that you’d actually forgive me for being a jerk that night.”
Niveah was prepared for some tired story about how fine she looked now compared to then. She was ready for all of that drivel but not for something so…sincere. She couldn’t believe what she was about to do but maybe, just maybe, he wasn’t as bad as she thought after all.
“All right.” She relented before she had a chance to change her mind.
She could practically hear Tobey grinning when he spoke, “Good. Be ready tonight at six. I’ll pick you up.”
“Just tell me where and—”
“I. Will. Pick. You. Up,” he ground out the words to make sure his point was clear.
“Fine,” Niveah mumbled. “Wait, how did you know I was going to even say yes or call today?”
“I didn’t. But since the crêpe chef is going to be in your office for a week, I thought my odds were good.”
“A week?” she screeched.
“Yep. One whole week. In your office. Every lunch.”
That was when Niveah smelled the unmistakable warm sweetness of chocolate, hazelnut, and strawberries. The chef was making one of her favorites.
God help her waistline.

At the turn of the moon, her fate hangs in the balance . . . and it’s up to her to make the right choice.

Amy’s Review:

4 Stars!!!!

I’ve only read one series about shifters by another author. I like them well enough but I was always worried that all shifter books would be the same. I mean really. They have a pack, someone is alpha, something happens and the pack is at risk. So to do something different can be hard but L.P. Dover definitely delivered different. Yes there was the normal things that I mentioned but there was so much more. I wasn’t expecting at least half of it and I was hooked from the first chapter. I didn’t want to stop. I read it in one sitting enjoying every minute and praying everything worked out like I wanted.

Bailey is awesome. I really loved her. She is a strong wolf. You’ll have to read to find out just how strong but she was amazing. She wasn’t a whiny character and I was happy to see her take responsibility for things. She really took control of herself and mistakes made by her.

I’m not going to go into the men. I feel like the blurb has it as a mystery so I want to leave it that way. Just know one is freaking awesome and the other is a dick that deserves everything he gets. 🙂

I absolutely loved this book. If you haven’t read a shifter book than you should definitely start with this one.

Spotlight and Interview: The Island and The Kite by Aurora Zahni

The Iland and the Kite

Two girls. Two stories. One day.
A murder spree and magic tea help two star crossed lovers see the light.

Mary Susan and Stefi Angel are two constant exes who can never get it right, always as eager to give up as they are to start up again. But one day in New York City helps change that forever.
The city is in a panic as the T and S Killers rising body count has everyone on edge. Free spirit Mary Susan just wants to see a movie and ends up trapped in Hell’s Kitchen being chased by vigilantes and murderers alike. She spends the night trying to escape the city that never sleeps and deciding if she should give Stefi another chance.
Star basketball player Stefi Angel can’t see the forest for the trees when it comes to love…until she drinks magical tea and suddenly has all the questions and the answers. She just hopes she can get Mary Susan to believe they have the kind of love worth fighting for and that it’s not too late.

“So…” Stefi took a deep breath. “How am I doing, red?” “Not bad. Maybe you’ll get most of me after all.” “I want it all this time.” “We’ll see.” Mary Susan laid her head on Stefi’s shoulder. “Hey.” She poked Stefi’s arm. “I have a gift for you back at my place.” “I bet you do. Just let me get you cleaned up first.” “No, silly. A real gift in a box with a bow and everything.” “I think I have everything I need.” They devoured their breakfast and Mary Susan napped on the drive back to her place. “Where’s your roommate?” Stefi asked when they got there. “At work.” Mary Susan removed her outer layer of clothing and announced, “I need to shower.” Stefi smiled and took off her shoes and socks. “Okay.” “That wasn’t an invitation. I’m filthy and I really need to shower. Will you wait for me?” Stefi nodded and then watched Mary Susan and the curves she loved walk to the bathroom in her skivvies. Be a better girlfriend. Stefi brought down all the shades and curtains in the room and put on some music at a low volume. When Mary Susan got out of the bathroom she was already in bed waiting for her. “Stefi…it’s been a long day. I don’t know what you think is going to happen here.” “Be quiet and come here and trust me.” Mary Susan listened to her and then cautiously slid under the covers. Stefi put both her long arms around her and gave her a gentle kiss on the lips. “Now I want you to sleep. I’m here. I’m yours. And I’m not going anywhere.”

~What are you currently working on?

I am really focusing these days and only working on three things right now. Wait, does editing count? Five things. I am working on five things! The main two being my ongoing superhero series with J Rose Alexander and my through the looking glass fantasy novel.

~What writing advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Be honest. In everything you do and everything you show, be honest. Creating a fictional world begins with honesty.

~Are you an organized author or scattered?

I am scattered so I compartmentalize all my mess so I can neatly work on one thing at a time.

~Do you plot out your story or write as it goes?

I pretend to plot but it never works, so I just revise at end of every chapter to make sure it all makes sense.

~Do you have any strange writing habits?

Not really. I love writing on buses and trains or when I’ve had a drink or two, but I think that applies to most writers. Oh wait, I do make up songs when I have a decent idea in the bathroom so that I don’t forget it. So often I will run out after shower singing until I have a chance to write it all down.

~Do you have writers block and how do you work around it?

I’ve never had block because I write so slow and meticulous I wouldn’t even notice if I did.

~Do you work on 1 story at a time or multiples?

I “focus” on one story but I always have at least 3 going.

~What is your favorite genre to read?

Whatever I am currently writing. I like immersing myself.

~What is the most wacky/crazy weird thing you received from a fan?

A compliment.

~What are your favorite hobbies?

I also love playing music and am an avid board gamer. I

~If you had a warning label what would it say?

No warning, no label, just a skull and crossbones sticker.

Spotlight and Interview: Changing Lives by Tracy Kincaid

Changing Lives

What if love-at-first-sight was not the “first-sight” after all?

Natalie Star is a modern woman, with modern sensibilities. Practical and realistic, she finds herself falling for a man named Thomas Andrews. Thomas is a perfect gentleman, but his love for her seems to be old, solid, staid– the kind that grows after years of love and life together. He speaks in riddles when she asks why he seems to know her so well–they were together in a time she can’t remember yet.

Thomas longs to tell Natalie everything he knows about her, about them. But it’s time that is the problem yet. There is a tragedy that they must endure before she can fully accept who they are, and why they are destined to be together. A tragedy that Thomas has been through once, and will go through again to find the piece of his heart that has been missing all these many years.

That tragedy is the Titanic…

As I touch it, I feel nothing but cold everywhere—in my bones, in my blood, in the room. I close my eyes, trying to touch the iceberg as long as I can, as the instructions say. This is what it felt like that night the Titanic sank. With all of those people dying in the cold water. As I stand with my eyes shut, I start to feel very cold and wet. I open my eyes and realize that somehow I’m in a small boat on the ocean at night with a life vest on and hundreds of people floating around me. Some dead, others screaming. Where am I? And where’s Thomas?
I start to yell Thomas’ name. How did I get here?
“Thomas, Thomas, Thomas? Help, anyone help!” I cry.
At that point, Thomas grabs me and pulls me away from the iceberg and back into the exhibit. His heavy breathing matches mine. We are the only two in the room as he grabs me and holds me tight. After a few moments as our breathing slows, I ask, “What just happened?”
“Like I said, you are not like the other people who walk through here. You are special. You were there,” he whispers.
“How is that possible? None of this makes sense.” I’m still shaking, and the room is very cold. “Can we please leave this room? I can’t stop shaking.”
“Yes, of course.” As we walk out into the lobby and through the front doors into the sunlight, I run to the first bench under a tree I can find. I want to be far away from everyone, from everything, from Thomas. I do notice that Thomas has stayed away from me for a while to allow me to breathe and try to figure out what the hell was going on. Thomas is sitting not far away, just watching me. And I’m thankful for the distance.
I start to recap the events of the past two days to myself. How is all of this happening to me? And why now? Who is Thomas Andrews really, and what does he want from me?
After what feels like hours of just sitting on the bench, I look up at Thomas, who’s just staring at me. He stands and walks over to me. “May I?” he asks.
I nod and he sits.
“Look, Natalie, I know this is a lot to take in—” he begins as I interrupt him.
“A lot to take in!” I shout. “You have not explained anything to me. You come to me and tell me we know each other from a long time ago. Yet you have told me nothing. I know nothing about you. I have no idea why I passed out in that room. And I have no idea what the hell happened when I touched that iceberg. Would you please just tell me what is going on, please?”

Author Interview

~What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on a book called Freeing Lost Souls. It is a Gettysburg/Civil War historical romance with a paranormal twist.

~Which one of your characters is your absolute favorite? Why?

Boy this is a hard question. I would have to say Thomas Andrews from Changing Lives. He has been through hell for so long. In Freeing Lost Souls I would have to say Sarah Finny. She is a strong woman who finally finds love.

~What writing advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Try. You never know until you try. I started playing with a story and never thought it would go anywhere. Now I’m a published author on Amazon’s best sellers list.

~Are you an organized author or scattered?

I’m a scattered author. When I write I just sit and write. As long as the words are coming to me I will sit until they stop. Or I pass out. Lol

~Do you plot out your story or write as it goes?

I’m a write as I go type of gal. I have an idea where I want the story to go it’s just a matter of getting to the end.

~Do you have any strange writing habits?

I tend to eat a lot of Jordan Almonds. I have a bowl sitting on my desk at all times.

~Do you have writers block and how do you work around it?

I do get writers block a lot. When that happens I’ll work outside or do a craft project. Usually that will trigger the story to come back to me.

~If you had a warning label what would it say?

“Watch out she has a paint brush!”

~Who is your favorite author?

I have so many faves it’s hard to call out any one author. I love J. K. Rowling and Stephanie Meyer just to name a few. They got me reading again and the more I read the more stories that got into my head.

~Favorite quote?

“Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what your going to get. ”

“Oh, really?” He stood up. “I’m not really afraid of you, Abby. Tell me, what do you do when you’re aroused?” He laid down his napkin.
“Do you touch yourself?” He took a step or two toward her end of the table.
Abby stood up, panic washing through her bloodstream. “Don’t you come anywhere near me, Cade Tallbull.”
“Do you run your hands over that sweet little body?”
He was coming closer, stalking her. Abby retreated. “Excuse me, I need to do the dishes. Why don’t you watch television, or better yet…” She brightened. “Why don’t you go take a dip in the stock pond? I put some testicle eating fish in there especially for you.”
Cade shook his head. “Nah, I saw ice on the pond when I drove up. And believe me, you want me to keep the boys safe.” He rubbed his package. “You might find a use for them someday soon.” Cade took another step closer to her. “But we could shower together.” This was fun. “Stop fighting it, Abby. Stop fighting me. You know you still want me. Admit it.”
Abby wasn’t admitting a damn thing. She glanced over her shoulder, measuring how far it was to her bedroom door. She needed a path to a fast get-away. “The dishes can wait till tomorrow. I’m tired.”
Cade wasn’t giving up. “When you touch yourself, do you ever think of me? When you rub your little clit and pinch your nipples, do you ever call out my name? Cade, oh, Cade, I want you, Cade.” He mimicked her voice.
He was about three feet away and aroused, heavily aroused. Abby could see the outline of his cock through his jeans. She stared, mesmerized and confused. Was that for her? “Me? Call your name? Never!” Lie. Lie. All lies.
“So, you do masturbate, don’t you? At least I admit that much.” He reached out for her.
And when he did, Abby turned and ran like the devil himself was after her. She sprinted across the room, down the hall, into her bedroom and slammed the door. And locked it. Then, she leaned back against it, clasping her heart, trying to catch her breath. She wasn’t scared of Cade. She was scared of herself.
Abby Grace King wanted Cade Tallbull more than she wanted life.
But she couldn’t have him. Ever.
She was just about to step away from the door when she heard him…
“Abby?” Cade’s whispered voice came from the other side of the door. She jumped. “Abby?”
“Go away, Cade.” She begged, desperate to have him – desperate to keep him at arm’s length.
“I’m going to be in bed just on the other side of the wall, thinking about you. Listen for me, Abby. You just might hear me moaning your name when I cum.”
“Oh, God,” she whispered. “I’m gonna kill him.” She heard him chuckle as he turned and went to his door.
“Goodnight, Abby,” he called. “Dream about me.”

Author Interview

~Which of your characters is your Book Boyfriend?

I try to be an impartial weaver of words, and to love all of my creations equally. But late at night, when I step into my dreams to fantasize scenes for future books, it’s Aron McCoy the eldest of the Tebow Ranch clan that I dream about. He is featured in COWBOY HEAT and I’LL REMEMBER YOU as well as making appearances in many other books I have crafted. Why? Aron is my choice for a book boyfriend because he is exactly what I crave in a man. He’s alpha. Sure of himself, powerful with an ingrained sense of right and wrong. He’s protective, yet dominant. He would die for the love of his life in a heartbeat, and he wants nothing more than for her to be happy. His sense of humor is very dry and he’s playful – in bed and out. Family is a priority for him and his beloved is the most important member of that family. He’s smart, but not pushy with his intelligence. Aron is Texas rich, which means his assets are land and cattle. He’s not showy or snobbish. Yea, he sounds perfect – that’s why he’s a fantasy.

~If you could go back in time what is one thing you would tell your teenage self?

Have confidence. Follow your dreams. Yes, you are a writer. Don’t wait. WRITE NOW.

~Name one of your pet peeves?

One? That’s too restrictive. I dislike emoticons and the inane LOL. People who assume they know you well, but don’t, are annoying. Sprinkles on desserts are juvenile and too sweet. People who judge others based on any criteria other than their abilities and their character deserve to be judged with the same yardstick. I also detest people who are cruel to animals.

~Favorite drink? Alcoholic or not.

You’re about to get more of an answer than you want. I am trying to change my ‘drinking’ habits. I’ve never enjoyed water and I need to become a water drinker for many reasons. My usual drink of choice is Diet Coke or a margarita but I’m trying to do better with water and green (yuck) tea.

~If you could date a celebrity who would it be and why?

Hmmmmm, oh my goodness. If you base the choice of date strictly on looks – – well, I’m fickle. I get new crushes almost daily. My latest is Eric Dane of The Last Ship, ex-McSteamy of Grey’s Anatomy Fame. But what happens, is that I take their looks or their celebrity persona and I create this fantasy personality to fuse with a character in my books. So, what I end up with has no basis in reality. It’s hard to think of dating someone when you don’t know what they’d be like in real life – are they a nice guy, or they full of themselves? Ah, to hell with it. All things being equal – JOE MANGINELLO!!!

~Most hated chore?

I hate all chores. I’m not a housekeeper. I have someone come in and muddle through my jungle. I’ve never ironed, I grab things out of the dryer and shake them off. I don’t usually make my bed, I straighten the bottom sheet and crawl back in it. If I’m alone, I won’t cook. I’d rather eat ketchup and bread rather than dirty up the kitchen and have to clean it up. GOOD THING I’M A WRITER!

~If you had a superpower, what would it be?

If I were a superhero, my superpower would be to be invisible. I’d love to go where I wanted and not have to deal with prying eyes and boundaries. I’m a recluse in many ways.

~What is your favorite movie?

Of all time? Nowadays when I go to the movies it’s mainly just to keep someone else company, which means I usually end up in a superhero movies, and I don’t like those kinds of movies very much. Despite what I write, I don’t like RomCom either. I prefer scary movies, and the one that has stuck with me through the years is THE OTHERS, a ghost story with Nicole Kidman.

~What is your preferred method to violently kill someone (in your book, of course)?

Ah, well that would depend on who it was, I suppose. In most of my books, since they are cowboys, the gun is the weapon of choice. But if I were going to be really nasty and wanted to make some suffer:

Throw them in a pit of poisonous snakes. OR

Slow drop of poison in the mouth so they’d have time to worry about it.

~Favorite quote?

I always have to look these up, because I don’t really have favorite quotes. A lot of the posters I see have good inspirational quotes on them, but they don’t stick with me. What I can tell you is two observations that I try to live by.

One is by Henry Ford – it goes something like this. “Whether you believe you CAN or whether you believe you CAN’T – either way, you will be right.” That viewpoint teaches that we do what we believe we can do, no more no less. AND

Mark Twain espoused this viewpoint. “At the end of the day, you won’t regret the things you did, you’ll regret the things you didn’t do.” I use this to push myself into doing the things that scare me, but that I know would be good for me.

Those are not exact quotes, they are my paraphrasing of the memory of the quote.
