C-VAC
 BY: STEPHANIE HENRY
November 17,2015

Synopsis

If someone told you they had a vaccine, medically proven to work and completely safe to take, that would both prevent and cure cancer of all types, would you take it? Briella was six years-old when her mother passed away from cancer. Five years later, C-Vac, the cancer vaccine, was announced. For most, it was considered a miracle. For others, like Briella’s dad, it was a suspicious hazard. Nonetheless, when people are offered a miracle, they’re not likely to pass it up. For eight years, cancer was simply a thing of the past. But once the side-effects of C-Vac start to emerge, Briella rapidly begins to understand that the world, as she knows it, will be forever changed. Now faced with new dangers she never thought possible, she’ll have to decide: hide away from anyone who could pose a threat or trust the one person she so desperately wants to let in?

In What Doesn’t Kill Us, we follow two teenagers in alternating point-of-views as they experience life-changing events. Drew is the son of a cop, raised in a small house on his dad’s average salary. His mother ran off when he was just a boy, due to a tragic accident that will forever define Drew’s life. Hailey is from a wealthy family and has a seemingly perfect life, until she learns of the secret her father has been keeping for years. Subsequently, her peaceful reality becomes morphed into something she never could have predicted. When Drew and Hailey meet, they quickly fall in love and ultimately discover that fate had meant for their lives to be perpetually entwined.

“This isn’t a bad story, but it’s not an entirely good story either. This is the story of us. Of me, really. And the guy who changed my life. But, not in the he-swept-me-off-my-feet-and-then-everything-was-Ok sense. No. He walked into my life like a thunderstorm would the sky; stirring things up and shaking me to my core. He was unsettling and uncontrolled. He wasn’t the safe bet. He was scary in an anything-could-happen kind of way. But just like a good thunderstorm, he was also wholly beautiful. His presence couldn’t be ignored. He awoke something within me that I didn’t even know was there. And after you’ve seen the sky in a thunderstorm’s aftermath, the everyday ordinary blue just looks a little too dull in comparison.”

Author Interview: Deanndra Hall

DSC_0228~What are you currently working on?

I’m working on getting the first book in each of my series set to permafree and then getting all of them out to all the major retailers. No more “just Amazon” for this girl.

~Who is your favorite author?

Oh, good grief, I don’t even know where to start. I’d better not start naming names because the author friends I forget to name will be mad at me.

~What writing advice do you have for aspiring authors?

This is a terrible time to decide to become an author. There are so many books out there. But I think I’d tell them that if they’ve put in their time, made good grades in English, gone to a good number of conferences, and really know their stuff, start writing. And don’t stop. Writers write. It’s time to quit playing around out there, people, and get serious about the craft.

~Which of your characters is your Book Boyfriend? Why?

Oh, no. I swore I’d never say. I’m about to break my own rule. So here goes: He’d be a combination of Tony and Carson. I love Tony – he’s the perfect blend of everything male and gentlemanly, smart and funny and determined. And completely devoted to his woman. But I love Carson’s country style (you haven’t met Carson yet, but you will soon) and I love that about him. So I’d say Tony – in boots. LOL

~Are you an organized author or scattered?

It just depends. When I start writing, I’m super focused and nothing pulls me out of it. But I have a lot of non-writing stuff that has to be done too, and I can get kind of scattered with that.

~Do you plot out your story or write as it goes?

I actually think in outline format, so that helps. But honestly, my plots come to me pretty much fully formed. I’ve only got two books I’m working on that haven’t been that way, and one of them is driving me absolutely nuts. But I’ll figure it out. The fun part is all of the little “incidental” scenes that come between the major plot points. I love those! (Think Vic and the swimming pool incident.)

~Which one of your characters is your absolute favorite? Why?

I can’t say that any one is my favorite, but the one closest to my heart is Nikki. I always tell people that there’s a lot of me in Nikki and a lot of Nikki in me. And I’m not kidding.

~Which one is your least favorite? Why?

I’d say Gloria from the Harper’s Cove series, but she’s too much fun! Right now I’ve got a character named Darcy who’s in the Moonlight & Moonshine series, and sometimes I want to slap the dog snot out of her. And it’s going to get worse before it gets better. As far as guys go, Steve redeemed himself in Renovating a Heart, but I still sometimes want to do what the Walters guys do – just look at him and say, “Shut up, McCoy!”

~Do you have any strange writing habits?

I always hear authors talking about the music they listen to while they’re writing. I don’t listen to anything. I don’t want any noise around. I want it perfectly quiet.

~Do you have writers block and how do you work around it?

Never had it. The closest I came was a few weeks ago and I realized that I was hesitating because I didn’t know as much about my subject as I needed to. I did a couple of hours of research and BOOM – problem solved!

~Do you work on 1 story at a time or multiples?

Right now I’ve got, oh, I think probably nine going. That’s not unusual for me. I just write along in them when a scene crops up and then I can go on or go back to something else.

~What is your favorite genre to read?

Southern fiction. I love Eudora Welty, Flannery O’Connor, William Faulkner, and Clyde Edgerton. And no matter what anyone thinks of him, I love Rick Bragg too.

~What is the most wacky/crazy weird thing you received from a fan?

I have a fan who’s become a friend and she gives me eggs! From her own chickens! And I love her for it.

~If you could go back in time what is one thing you would tell your teenage self?

Not to listen to all the people who told me I would never amount to anything and no one would ever love me. It was all lies.

~What are your favorite hobbies?

I love to hike, kayak, and work out. I love going to small craft breweries, wineries, and distilleries.

~Do you believe in love at first sight?

Not really. I really think relationships are something you have to be deliberate about. And I think a good part of love is respect. You have to know someone to really respect them.

~Name one of your pet peeves?

When I sit down and spend time with a person and I realize as I’m leaving that I know everything about them and they know nothing about me because they weren’t interested enough to even ask. You wouldn’t believe how many times that’s happened to me. Oh, and people who go to the store in their pajamas. Makes me want to run up behind them and yank their pants down.

~If you were a genie, what wish would you absolutely not grant?

I would never grant a wish to someone to make them something they’re not. Unless they’re transgendered. Then I’d grant their wish to become transgendered without having surgery. That would work out nicely.

~Favorite drink? Alcoholic or not.

Water. Alcohol is a close second. A good beer, a great mixed drink, or moonshine!

~What’s the one thing you can’t live without?

Chocolate. What kind of silly question is that? LOL

~If you could date a celebrity who would it be and why?

Oh, that’s easy: Joe Manganiello. Why? You obviously need your eyes checked if you have to ask that.

~What is one thing no one knows about you?

I went squirrel hunting once and lost my bra. Long story. We don’t have time for it here.

~Favorite sport/sports team?

Pro football: Cincinnati Bengals. Pro baseball: Cincinnati Reds. Collegiate sports (my favorite): Murray State University, University of Louisville, and the Kentucky Wildcats, in that order, and my favorite sport to see them play is basketball.

~Do you have any hidden talents?

Do you mean like can I bend down until my head is sticking back between legs and I can look at my own arse? No. No, I do not. I have a great talent for falling down from a standing still position. Does that count?

~Most hated chore?

OMG, unloading the dryer! I hate it!!!

~Pick two celebrities to be your parents.

Dad: Mark Harmon. He’s the perfect combination of sweet and stern. Mom: Diane Keaton. I just think she’d make the greatest mom!

~Have you ever been in trouble with the police?

Nope. I’ve managed to outwit them every time.

~If you had a superpower, what would it be?

To just think about a book and have it write itself. That would be awesome.

~If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Well, duh – chocolate. Next question.

~Do you have any nicknames?

Sir calls me Princess. Our son is six feet and two inches; occasionally he’ll stand beside me, pat my head, and say, “My little mommy.” He thinks he’s so funny.

~Do you like or dislike surprises? Why or why not?

Not so much unless it’s good. If it’s bad, then no. I also don’t like bad stuff when it’s not a surprise.

~What’s your favorite fast food chain?

I don’t eat much fast food, but I’d say Arby’s. I’m a Reuben fanatic, and theirs are really pretty good.

~If you had a warning label what would it say?

CAUTION: Engage at your own risk. Sanity may be compromised.

~If you had to describe yourself as an animal, which one would it be?

I’d probably be an owl. Nocturnal, a loner, and very observant.

~What is one thing you will never do again?

Fall down and break my kneecap. At least not if I can help it.

~What was your first job?

I worked for a company here called Hoe Supply Company. I know what you’re thinking, but I wasn’t; it was a plumbing supply place. And I was sixteen. Although at sixteen I was quite the hoe. Ho? Hoo? You know what I mean.

~Who is one person you would like to meet for coffee?

Michio Kaku. He’s brilliant. I’d love to sit for an hour or so and pick his brain.

~What is the best joke you’ve ever played on someone or had played on you?

Okay, so you know those little snappers? The kind that look like a teeny-tiny tamale with a string coming out each end? Years ago, Sir worked afternoons. I’d put the kids to bed and then go to bed myself. He’d come in about twelve thirty at night and climb into bed. So I took one of those, trimmed the string off to about three quarters of an inch, and taped one end to the underside of the toilet seat and the other to the top of the toilet rim. Then I went to bed. I heard him come home and I waited for him to go to the bathroom, but apparently he went before he left work, so he just undressed and got into bed. I was pretty disappointed. But I roused about three thirty when he got up to go to the bathroom. Mind you, I was still half asleep and yet I was trying not to laugh. Anyway, I heard him walk into the bathroom and then, “BANG!” There wasn’t another sound except him whizzing, and then he came back to bed. By that time, I was about to choke just trying to keep from laughing. I wondered what he’d say and, just as serious, all he said was, “Damn near blew my balls off.” We’ve been laughing about that all these years.

~What is your favorite TV show?

Believe it or not, I don’t watch TV but if I did, it would be Big Bang Theory. I always loved Frazier too. And I love criminal dramas (NCIS, Criminal Minds, CSI).

~Do you like to go out or stay home?

Stay home. I’m not much of a social butterfly. I love people, but I’m most comfortable here with my laptop, my books, and my dogs.

~What is your favorite movie?

The Princess Bride, followed by anything Bill Murray or Johnny Depp.

~What is your preferred method to violently kill someone (in your book, of course)?

Ohhhhh, I can’t tell you. You’ll just have to read Kindred Spirits when it comes out and find out!

~Are you a Tom boy or a girly girl?

I’m not a Tom boy, but I’m not a girly girl. I’m more of a Plain Jane. Even when I dress up, I like for it to be simple. But I love my western boots!

~Do you take the “personality” quizzes, like on Buzzfeed/Facebook?

They were so inaccurate that I just quit. They came up as some of the wildest things. I finally gave up.

~What is your favorite holiday?

Valentine’s Day!

~What is your favorite/ go to cuss word?

I’m just about the biggest F-bomb dropper you’ll ever meet. But what you’ll hear me say most often is, “Holy hell!”

~Do you have any piercings/tattoos? If so where?

Two holes in each ear and a nose piercing (left nostril). The only tattoo I’ve got is the one on my left wrist. I had it custom drawn by a local artist for The Celtic Fan, used it in the book, then had temporary tattoos made out of it, then decided I wanted it inked on me! Sir wants the two of us to get matching tats next year.

~Do you like tattooed bad boys or sweet good guys?

I want them to be smart, classy, polite, and good in the sack. Don’t care about tattoos. But I don’t like shaved heads.

~Favorite quote?

“My response is my responsibility; your response is your responsibility.” It’s actually my own, and I use it when I hear someone say, “So-and-so made me mad.” No, you chose to be mad. That’s your choice. We’re all responsible for our own actions and reactions.

~What is one of your phobias?

Heights. Those skywalks? Nope. Never gonna happen.

~What are you currently working on?

I’m taking a short break from the Trident Series to work on a stand alone contemporary romance which would not leave me alone.

~Who is your favorite author?

I have so many of them but my current must haves are from Cherise Sinclari and Lexi Blake

~What writing advice do you have for aspiring authors?

I wrote my first book three years before I began the Trident Series and while the story line was great, the writing sucked! I then took a very long break from writing. When I first wrote Leather & Lace, I again did a lot of things that were no-no’s in the writing community such as using too many dialogue tags and shifting POV’s in the middle of a scene. Thankfully I had a few more experienced authors who took the time to explain a lot of things to me and gave me their favorite reference sites and programs. Since then I’ve tried to pass them on to other up and coming authors. So my advice is, if someone offers you a way to make your book better, listen to them. Most authors want you to succeed as much as you want to.

~Which of your characters is your Book Boyfriend? Why?

Again this is hard… I love all my boys! But I think so far, Jake Donovan has been my favorite – too bad he’s gay! (And fictional!)

~Are you an organized author or scattered?

I’m pretty organized for the most part, but if a scene isn’t coming to me or a later scene pops into my head, I will jump ahead and write it then go back later on to connect the two scenes.

~Do you plot out your story or write as it goes?

I will start with a very basic idea of the story, but I usually write as I go.

~Which one of your characters is your absolute favorite? Why?

Again, I have to go with Jake. He was the most complex main character I’ve written to date and there was so much I learned about him that it actually surprised me in the end.

~Which one is your least favorite? Why?

Any of the bitches or villains in any of the books. Take your pick.

~Do you have any strange writing habits?

After multiple knee surgeries I got used to laying on my “L” shaped couch and having my laptop on my lap. Now it’s how I write all the time.

~Do you have writers block and how do you work around it?

Since I started the Trident Series, I can honestly say I haven’t had a true writer’s block. Sometimes if a scene isn’t coming to me, I either skip it and come back or go walk the dogs and play the last scene or two in my mind like a movie. Usually I’ll find the direction the story needs to go.

~Do you work on 1 story at a time or multiples?

I always have several books going at once, but I usually work on one primary. But if an idea pops up for one of the others, I’ll flip over and at least write the gist of it so I don’t forget.

~What is your favorite genre to read?

Suspense/romance with some hot sex – pretty much what I write.

~What is the most wacky/crazy weird thing you received from a fan?

Nothing wacky yet but the year isn’t over yet.

~If you could go back in time what is one thing you would tell your teenage self?

You know all these books you love to read? You’d be surprised you can write them too!

~Do you believe in love at first sight?
