Spotlight and Interview: Blood & Lillies (Bloodlines Series) by Lyn Croft

Blood and Lilies

First in the Bloodlines Series

Once cast from Heaven, Zillah has vowed to destroy God and overtake his kingdom. But a key is needed to open the gates between the two realms.
The Key to the gate walks the earth in the form of a woman…young, innocent and completely unaware of her importance in the battle between good and evil. Once her blood is shed, Zillah can open the portal to release her father…Lucifer himself.
Cara, a college sophomore, is quickly thrown into the world of the supernatural, as well as learning of her true ancestry. Vampires, werewolves and the Nephilim are now a part of her reality. As the beings struggle to protect her, she fights to keep her sanity as her mortal realm is crushed.
Secrets are revealed that could shatter Cara’s new found love, as well as lead to her ultimate death. A family is torn apart as the battle to save the key leads them down a road of betrayal and heartache. Loved ones are lost, lines are crossed, and nothing is as it seems. Lies and truths twist and turn, leaving us with only one question…
Could you sacrifice the one you love to save the world?

The evening sky pulsed, hues of deep purples and blacks engraving blurry lines above the earth. The night echoed its cries, carried by angry breezes through the hills of the land. The cemetery, cascaded in carved tombstones that sprouted from the ground, laid empty and dormant, except for the busy, yet silent whispers of the dead.
The ground, wet and damp, gave way beneath Cara’s bare feet as she trudged through the mud pushing between her toes. Her eyes traveled towards the ground to study her soiled feet, finding her body was draped in a simple, yet elegant white dress which graced her pale legs just below her knees. The plunging neckline stopped just beneath the cleft of her breast as the thin silk straps hugged the tops of her shoulders, exposing her bare delicate skin.
She scanned around her, alone and frightened, like a young child strayed from its mother. It was so dark, and the crested moon, swarmed by rolling darkened clouds, offered no safe haven of light to guide her way. Slow and unsure, she stepped cautiously, waiting blindly for an edge that would send her spiraling down into a never-ending abyss, swallowing her whole. The shadows danced in front of her, playing tricks on her unfocused eyes as her feet took her step by step.
Where was she? How did she get here? She could hear faint whispers of the dead crying out to her from the spirit world. Their words made no sense as they all jumbled together like a soft but unmelodic hum in the air. Her ears strained to make out parts of the words, hoping to piece together some language so she could better understand why they’d brought her here.
Realization struck. The voices had guided her here. She turned around to where the whispers grew, louder and more needful. She followed them as they increased, vibrating through her head as if they were coming from inside her brain, instead of churning in the air around her. The darkness frightened her, yet she still continued, following the only guidance she had.
She could hear it now. Through the vast echo of the whispers, she could make out her name. They called to her, begged her to come near. She obeyed.
Something hard struck her toes, shooting instant pain up through her legs, like lightning igniting through her to her very core. Her body flew forward as she reached out to stop her fall. She expected a large stone to split her head. Or perhaps the tip of a metal cross would impale her through her chest and end it all, without her knowing or seeing it in the darkness before her. But there was nothing as her body hit the soft ground beneath her.
Grass laced itself through her fingers as she looked up to the gravestone in front of her. The clouds that had hugged the moon so well broke, lighting the etched carvings before her so she could see. What she read on the engraving shook her to the core. Her eyes couldn’t process, couldn’t comprehend what she was seeing.

Beloved Friend and Student
We will miss you always
Oct. 18, 1992 to Dec. 21, 2012
A cry escaped her lips as Cara pushed herself up from the ground as fast as she could, stumbling backwards. She wanted to turn away, run and never look back. There was no way in hell she was going to stay here to hang out with her own tomb. And the date…it was this Friday’s date…or had it already arrived and was now in the past? Cara realized she had no idea of what time it was, or the day, but she needed to escape and get out of this place as fast as her bare feet could carry her.

You’re disappointed I didn’t sleep with you last night?” Ryker asked.

“Not at all. I enjoy sleeping alone. I have more room.”

“You lie, angel. I could feel your disappointment this morning. All you have to do is tell me you want me and I’ll stay. I have to hear it.”

“You know I want you, Ryker. I’m sure you could figure that out the other night.”

My whole life, I never needed anyone to protect me, not even my parents. And when it came down to it, they didn’t do a very good job when it came to Kade. I knew I could survive on my own. Admitting I needed or even wanted someone was foreign to me. Saying the words out loud was near impossible.

“You showed me, but haven’t told me. Words can be powerful,” he replied.

Rolling my eyes, I got out of bed and threw on some clothes before going downstairs. He was in the kitchen with his back to me, shirt off, wearing only a pair of boxers. Holy fuck. “So if I take off my clothes and lay down on the table, you wouldn’t have sex with me?”

He chuckled. “Nope.”

“You sure?”

“Yep.” He continued on with cooking while I stood there, dumbfounded. I didn’t believe him for a second. His back stiffened when I took off my shirt and pants and climbed up on the table.

“I am so hungry,” I announced, waiting for him to turn around. When he did, he completely ignored me and sat down with his plate of food.

He pointed to the counter. “Your plate’s up there.”

“You’re seriously not going to look at me?”

He studied an invisible spot on the table and placed a piece of bacon in his mouth, crunching it slowly. “You’re not ready for that.”

I waited for him to sneak a peek but he didn’t. “Who’s the stubborn one now?”

He chuckled. “Still you, sweetheart. You have me beat.”

Amy’s Review:

4 Stars!!!!

I’ve only read one series about shifters by another author. I like them well enough but I was always worried that all shifter books would be the same. I mean really. They have a pack, someone is alpha, something happens and the pack is at risk. So to do something different can be hard but L.P. Dover definitely delivered different. Yes there was the normal things that I mentioned but there was so much more. I wasn’t expecting at least half of it and I was hooked from the first chapter. I didn’t want to stop. I read it in one sitting enjoying every minute and praying everything worked out like I wanted.

Bailey is awesome. I really loved her. She is a strong wolf. You’ll have to read to find out just how strong but she was amazing. She wasn’t a whiny character and I was happy to see her take responsibility for things. She really took control of herself and mistakes made by her.

I’m not going to go into the men. I feel like the blurb has it as a mystery so I want to leave it that way. Just know one is freaking awesome and the other is a dick that deserves everything he gets. 🙂

I absolutely loved this book. If you haven’t read a shifter book than you should definitely start with this one.

Book Blitz: Hexed Hearts by Becca Vincenza

Hexed Hearts by Becca Vincenza
Publication date: April 2015
Genres: New Adult, Paranormal

Colette had known all her life that she was half human and half werewolf. She had no expectations of a life filled with love and adventure.

Everything changed on her 21st birthday. A curse casted by witches centuries ago set things in motion, things she could have never imagined. A past that Colette has no clue about has come back to steal her away.

When Hunter, her destined but very unexpected mate, arrives, she is at a complete loss. She must learn to forget an old love and how to make room for a new love.

The curse is being recast and Colette must stop it in order to save the wolves, all the while finding who she really is.

Hunter tight black pants. I could see the contours of his strong, thick thighs. My eyes trailed up he was wearing the gray shirt that I had stolen from him when he left.

Hunter leaned against his motorcycle. He held bulky black helmet with an open face. When I looked up at his eyes, I saw the smile there.

“No. No way,” I stuttered and backed away from him. While my tone was light, a touch of fear and excitement rushed through me.

“Yes,” Hunter moved quickly and stood in front of me in the matter of seconds.

“This is pay back, isn’t it?”

“I thought all girls had a motorcycle fetish? Hoping for that bad boy with a bike,” Hunter said with a half-smile. He was enjoying this entirely too much.

“No, most girls are stupid and don’t realize those things are death traps. And I shudder to think how many bugs will meet their untimely demise in my mouth!”

Hunter raised his eyebrows at me and held the helmet hovering over my head.

“You’re part wolf and you’re with me. I’m your mate. I’d never do anything that would put you in danger.”

“Fine,” I grumbled. “Still doesn’t solve the bug problem.”

Hunter placed the bulky helmet on my head and moved to snap the clasp beneath my chin. I lifted my head up for him. When I looked into his eyes, I saw the contentment in them. His beard was trimmed. For me? How nice.  I watched as the lines in his face soften as he worked.

“If you keep looking at me like that I’ll never finish.”

His eyes flickered up to mine and a blush stole across my cheeks. I was paying too much attention to his lips and I forgot everything else. It felt silly, seeing how much time I’d spent with him, but butterflies took flight in my stomach. My nerves felt like they were on fire.

Author Interview: Becca Vincenza

Author Interview with Becca Vincenza

~What are you currently working on?

I am working on getting my next release Hexed Hearts which is a standalone, werewolf/witch story edited. And I am writing the third book – chronically – in the Rebirth Series called Burned.

~Who is your favorite author?

This is an unfair question. I have many, hehe. A few include: Melissa Haag, Janelle Stalder, Airicka Phoenix, Margaret Taylor, Stacey Marie Brown, etc, etc, etc.

~What writing advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Take your time. That is the best advice I can give anyone, ever. It’s okay if it takes you an extra three months to get the book out, do.not.rush.

~Which of your characters is your Book Boyfriend? Why?

Right now? Hunter. He is *swoon*. Yeaaahhh.

~Are you an organized author or scattered?

Scattered beyond belief, but an organized scattered. I don’t really outline or anything like that but I also don’t write out of order if I can help it. If I do I keep the documents close at hand and all organized.

~Do you plot out your story or write as it goes?

I don’t really plot out in the traditional sense, like with writing an outline. I have the general idea of what I want to get done, usually about half way through the book do I ever feel the need to write it down. But I am more of a pantser then I am anything else. So  write what comes to me.

~Which one of your characters is your absolute favorite? Why?

Probably at this point of time, Colette. I think I put a little extra of me into her, she has some of the same quirks of me and I think she was just a fun, unique character, again all in my opinion. But she thinks differently, she can be a bit odd.

~Which one is your least favorite? Why?

This is an interesting question. I would like to say one of my villains because they are so evil but I sort of have to say Drake. He is a hard character to love. I don’t necessary dislike him or anything like that but he was hard to write. He was just difficult.

~Do you have any strange writing habits?

No not really. That I am aware of.

~Do you have writers block and how do you work around it?

I have gotten writers block many times before. A lot of times there really isn’t anything I can do I have to wait around which sucks but is the case. Sometimes getting out of the house and just wondering – the mall, target, etc. Sometimes that is what gets me going again.

~Do you work on 1 story at a time or multiples?

I wish I was cool enough to be able to work on more than one thing at a time. I don’t have time to do that unfortunately. I have limited time that I get to write that if I try to write two things at once one always get a little neglected and then I get behind in both trying to catch up in the other.

~What is your favorite genre to read?

Favorite above all others, paranormal. Urban, romantic, fantasy, etc, love it.

~Do you believe in love at first sight?

I believe in the hope in love at first sight. I believe that love is something that we want to obtain in such a magical way, and that it is part magic, but a big heaping part of hard work. Love is forged and formed.

~Favorite drink? Alcoholic or not.

Appie Juice. No joke. I am a child and I love apple juice and I call it appie juice.

~What’s the one thing you can’t live without?

Books. Simply books.

~What is one thing no one knows about you?

I’m stupid shy. I might not come off that way but when I first meet people, and even the thought of introducing myself to new people, I clam up. I am not trying to be rude, and I have prep-talked my way out of it but it always seems to happen. I am terrified to rejection in any form. Friendship or otherwise. But I love meeting new people, I’m always up for making new friends. I’m a huge contradiction of myself.

~Favorite sport/sports team?

What is this sports you speak of? 😉

~Do you have any hidden talents?

Umm, does watching tv, while reading, while listening to music count as a hidden talent?

~Have you ever been in trouble with the police?

~If you had a superpower, what would it be?

There are so many to choose from. My superhero would be to make decisions 😄 I am very indecisive.

~If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Tacos. Seriously anything to deal with taco meat – Mexican pizza, taco salad, tacos.

~Do you have any nicknames?

Yes. A few. One in particular. *clears throat* its boo

~Do you like or dislike surprises? Why or why not?

Ehhh, depends. I like good surprises. I don’t like bad surprises. Hehehe.

~What’s your favorite fast food chain?

I actually have cut back on the fast food-ness when I realized that most of them give me tummy issues afterwards but if you consider Qdoba fast food that would be my choice.

~If you had a warning label what would it say?

May become addicting. 😉

~What is one thing you will never do again?

Um this really isn’t a certain activity but rather something I used to do when I was younger. I had a very short tempter, I really grew out of that in high school and mellowed out. I never want to go back to having such a short fuse. Life is better if you laugh.

~What was your first job?

Wetzel Pretzels. I made pretzels. That was my first job 😄

~Who is one person you would like to meet for coffee?

There are so many people I would love to meet for coffee for reals. But if I had to pick someone ughh I don’t wanna just pick one. There are a lot of author friends I would love to be able to meet and have coffee with, a lot of readers as well.

~What is the best joke you’ve ever played on someone or had played on you?

Currently the standing best joke that was played on me was when my friend Andrea tried to sneak up on me. I am a jumpy person, anyways when she was coming around the back side of my car she slipped when she tried to scare me – no Andrea’s were hurt in this practical joke – but it was hilarious for me.

~What is your favorite TV show?

Oh I have a lot. But a classic favorite of mine is Friends and Doctor Who.

~Do you like to go out or stay home?

Depends, but more times than not, I am very happy to just staying in.

~What is your favorite movie?

Again there are a lot, a lot but one of my absolute favorites and I did warn you I was a child so here it goes: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. And then Brick is another favorite of mine – that is not a kid movie 😄

~What is your preferred method to violently kill someone (in your book, of course)?

I tend to stick with snapping of the neck – aka mostly Elijah does this but yeah.

~Are you a Tom boy or a girly girl?

Either? I am not really tom boy-ish but im soooo not a girly girl im somewhere inbetween.

~Do you take the “personality” quizzes, like on Buzzfeed/Facebook?

Nooo….*looks around nervously* that isn’t what I do *nervously giggle* in my spare time

~What is your favorite holiday?

I don’t really have one to be honest. I am not huge on Halloween because I don’t ever have anywhere to go, and the dressing up-ness loses it appeal when you have nowhere to go. I am not a Grinch that is for sure but holidays can be exhausting.

~What is your favorite/ go to cuss word?

Fuck. Not even going to lie I got for the big guns.

~Do you have any piercings/tattoos? If so where?

I have my ears pierced though I haven’t wore earrings in a while which I really should. And I have one tattoo on the left side of my shoulder (on the back).

~Do you like tattooed bad boys or sweet good guys?

I like a guy with an amazing personality and sense of humor. But if he has tattoos and a sexy ass beard all the better.

~Favorite quote?

“All that we seem or seem to be is but a dream within a dream” – Edgar Allen Poe, for a very long time it was what I was going to get tattooed on my body until I decided to change to a quote of my own.

~What is one of your phobias?

Ventriloquist dolls. *shudders*

~Who is your favorite author?

My sister, Lizzy Ford.

~What writing advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Keep at it! You will improve with practice just like anything else. Don’t be afraid to research things you’re not certain of, such as character arcs or writing structure, to actively improve your writing.

~Which of your characters is your Book Boyfriend? Why?

Probably Michael in “The Black Jester,” because he is sensitive to women and wants to protect them. In the story, he does anything he has to in order to protect Rose, whom he comes to love. And he wreaks serious havoc in protecting her!

~Are you an organized author or scattered?

I’m fairly organized!

~Do you plot out your story or write as it goes?

Most of the time, my stories write themselves but there are times when I need to step back and make sure things are coming together, and if not I’ll make changes or add things in.

~Which one of your characters is your absolute favorite? Why?

~Which one is your least favorite? Why?

I love all my main characters, if I didn’t I wouldn’t write them into existence. I do have some criminal scumbags in my Kings of New Orleans series, but don’t worry, I take care of them properly!

~Do you have any strange writing habits?

I can write a novella (35k words) in a week, and during that week I do nothing but write, eat, sleep, write, eat, sleep! It’s a really concentrated block of time but it seems to be conducive to my ability to be creative.

~Do you work on 1 story at a time or multiples?

I like to work on one story at a time.

~What is your favorite genre to read?

Actually I read a lot of non-fiction!

~What are your favorite hobbies?

I wouldn’t grant anyone’s wish to hurt themselves or anyone else!

~Favorite drink? Alcoholic or not.

Sweet iced tea!

Benedict Cumberbatch! He is just an amazing human being and oh, my, that voice…!

That I secretly want to be an actor in a play!

~Favorite sport/sports team?

I’m not a sports fan

~Do you have any hidden talents?

Marry the wrong person!

~What was your first job?

I worked the drive-thru at Long John Silver’s!

My soul mate – whoever he is!

~What is your favorite TV show?

Of all time, it has to be The Simpsons

~What is your preferred method to violently kill someone (in your book, of course)?

With a knife so they can FEEL it! Hahaha!

My upcoming new release (March 2015) is a Paranormal Romance Thriller called “The Sober Companion.” Here is the synopsis:

For Vampire-Americans to win legal independence, they must successfully complete 6 months of live blood rehab followed by 6 months of 24/7 observation by a sober companion.

Elias Alexander, a legendary thousand year-old vampire with celebrity status, decides to give up his illegal vampire lifestyle in order to fit in to American society. After spending his entire life waiting for his true love, Elizabeth, to continually reincarnate due to a witch’s curse, only to keep dying in her 25th year of life, Eli is losing hope that he will ever be able to hold on to her permanently.

Eric Wayne hates vampires but is court ordered to work as a sober companion to avoid prison time for his violent act against one. Hiding his own self-destructive addiction, he is assigned to the celebrity vampire who proves to be difficult to hate as they develop a deep bond that transcends the boundaries of friendship.

Eli determines Eric is the modern day reincarnation of Elizabeth and he is faced with the most difficult decision of his life. He must choose between saving a mortally wounded Eric by turning him into a vampire, or letting him die in hopes Elizabeth will reincarnate again in her original form.

The definition of love is put to the ultimate test as Eli and Eric struggle to navigate a hostile world of discrimination and danger while depending on each other to survive.
