Excerpt

He walked out the door, glancing back at his aunts once more. Both of them were smiling his way, waving and watching him like a bunch of hawks. He started toward the gardens feeling Maggie’s eyes on his back until he was out of her view.

It wasn’t long before he came upon the grove, but his quest was soon forgotten.

For the second time in his life, he was brought to a standstill by the beauty in front of him. He caught sight of that long brown hair flowing over a creamy shoulder… that was shaking.

The air in Liam’s lungs caught and he felt that tightness in his chest from before, when he heard a sniffle and saw the woman wipe under her eyes.

She was crying. This stunning, flawless woman was sobbing and he felt that tightness twist and pull until he couldn’t just stand and watch any longer. Liam looked around to see who had hurt her, but no one else was in the grove. He was angry for her and heartbroken that a woman like her would ever have a reason to cry like that.

She was so wrapped up in her world that she never even heard him step into the grove. His footsteps on the grass were silent, but surely she would have heard him crashing through the trees. He watched her a moment longer, debating on whether to sneak away and leave her in peace or find out what was making her so sad and fix it for her.

His mouth decided for him.

“Tears don’t belong on a face so beautiful.”

She startled and immediately stood and backed away from him. Smart woman, but it was still frustrating to see that it was out of wisdom, not instinct. She regarded him warily before looking around to find that they were completely alone. The trees surrounding the grove were covering them from anyone who might be watching.

Liam normally wouldn’t allow this type of situation to occur. He would have left her alone and gone to fetch Maggie to help. But this wasn’t a normal situation and Liam couldn’t help but feel drawn to the woman standing before him, looking like she was about to run.

“You don’t need to be afraid of me, bird. I’ll not harm you.”

Her shoulders sagged for a moment of brief relief before she lifted them straight and jutted out her chin. Her show of strength was impressive, but Liam could see the unease in her eyes so he stayed where he was and let her have her space.

She cleared her throat and crossed her arms over her chest. “I am sorry if I am trespassing. Maggie told me to come here and it was just a beautiful place to sit and think.”

Her voice sent a jolt of electricity straight into his gut. A husky sound that vibrated all the way down his spine and he couldn’t stop himself from studying her lips as she spoke.

Good Lord, help me.

She quickly wiped the tears from her face and sniffed a few times before gaining her composure and lifting her chin once more. Liam had been right the day before, she was stunning up close. Tear stains on her cheeks, eyes red rimmed, nose red, lips red. If she was this beautiful crying, he was doomed when she was smiling.

The very idea of her was… impossible.

Her yellow dress didn’t cling to the curves he knew would be there, but it gave a hint of a graceful womanly figure and the exposed skin of her chest beckoned his eyes. His lips thinned, cursing himself for being disrespectful and he looked down at her legs.

That didn’t help at all.

Eyes, Liam. Look at her eyes.

After clearing his throat, he said, “You are not trespassing. It is a garden for the public, but no one comes in anymore.”

“Well, that’s a shame. It’s breath taking,” she said and dropped down to the small bench to sit once more.

Apparently she decided that he was harmless and he sighed with relief. Liam kept his distance, hoping he wouldn’t startle her anymore than he already did. She turned her head to look at him with a sad grin.

“This is a nice place to sit and think. Feels secluded even though it isn’t.”

That voice. Raspy yet feminine. It sent another shock to his veins and his blood pumped harder. If she kept speaking, he would pass out from his suddenly improved circulation.

Liam stepped closer and caught a glimpse of the freckles running across her nose. A ray of sunshine crossed over her face as she found a comfortable position on the bench. She was not only breath taking, but she glowed with an aura that he had never seen before. She was sad, of that he had no doubt, but her presence exuded happiness. Like being this close to her could make everything in the world right again.

I should send her up north and see if that solves all these troubles, Liam thought to himself.

Those freckles. He needed to get closer and get a better look at them.

“Do you mind?” he asked, gesturing to the small spot of bench beside her.

Her eyes narrowed, red rimmed and only slightly puffy.

It felt like hours instead of seconds before she sniffled and nodded her head, a shy grin pulling at her lips. “Please. There isn’t anywhere else to sit unless you favor the grass.”

“Aye, I do, but I favor a beautiful woman more,” he replied.

Her blush was devastating and it spread across her cheeks like the red of a summer sunset. Poetic, Liam. Very poetic.

Author Bio

I live in Morgan Utah with my husband, daughter, and dog, Kolo. I write as often as my active daughter will let me and my husband has the patience of a saint. I find inspiration from dreams, people I meet, and life experiences. When I write, I usually end up drinking one too many cans of Peace Tea, eating three too many Fruit by the Foot fruit snacks, and accidently kicking my pup and best buddy, Kolo, too many times since he loves to sleep under my desk at my feet.

I started writing as a teen, but my fear of the unknown won out every time and I threw everything out. After becoming a mother and deciding to stay at home to raise my beautiful little girl, I tried again when I couldn’t stop thinking of ideas. I loved every minute, every hour of sleep lost, and every character that came to life in my mind.

It’s strange, but my favorite moments are when I have writer’s block because I can turn to my husband and find inspiration through him by just doing what we do best together. Talking, laughing, and just being in love. He doesn’t like to read, but he never stops encouraging me to keep going.

Writing has become an important part of my life and every book has a special place in my heart.

Amy’s Review:

5 STARS!!!!!

“Oh, my beauty. Your mother melted when I burped.”

As I’ve gone through each book in this series I have fallen in love with every character that Jessica Wilde has wrote about. But from the very beginning in Leverage when I got my first glimpse of Liam I declared he was my favorite and that I officially had a crush on an older man. Liam stole my breath from the first time he appeared. He has been my favorite through every single book even though I was just getting small parts of him. That is until Protector. I was antsy with anticipation to start Protector so that I could get more of the man that I fell head over heels for. Jessica Wilde did not disappoint.

“Tears don’t belong on a face so beautiful.”

**Sigh**

In Protector the story still continues with the family after Missing. Everything is still moving about as normal but we get flash backs of when Liam is remembering Isabelle/Izzy. We get to see the struggles they both went through when they first met so long ago in Ireland. The hardship that Izzy was so brave to pull herself out off. It was a struggle but she did it. The love that these two shared through this whole book is astonishing.  To watch Liam remember his wife not only in the past but in the present brought happiness and tears to my eyes. It gave me full body chills. These two were a match made in heaven. She truly lives on in her kids and shines through with every action they do.

One of my favorite parts during Protector is when Ash went into labor.

The sound of liquid splashing made every pair of eyes drop down to the area of wood floor beneath Ash.

Gus and Con practically jumped away clinging to each other with expressions or horror on their faces.

“Umm, Ash. You just peed,” Gus pointed out, looking pale and terrified. Liam wanted to smack him in the back of the head like everyone had over the years.

“It’s not pee, you moron!” Ash shouted. “My water just broke.”

Gus and Con never seem to disappoint in any book. They will make you laugh even with tears pouring down your face. Emily and Aiden are amazing in Protector too and I hope that the author decides to write more about this family so I can see where they end up.

“I wish with all my heart that I could have met her.”

“You already have, love. Conall is a part of her and the way he loves you comes from Isabelle herself.”

Protector had my emotions all over the place. One minute I would be laughing, then I would be crying and then smiling. I probably cried through at least half of this book. Yes, I said HALF so make sure to have tissues around. I’m probably just being a cry baby, but I really connected with this series and I couldn’t help but feel all the emotions they did. This series is an attention grabbing, heart racing, soul searing, tear chasing, love soaring, family embracing kinda series.

There are two things in this life that Gus Brannock truly loves; his family and his job. His family is growing and he wants what his brother and sister have before the job he’s worked so hard for takes its toll. The woman he’s got his eye on, however, isn’t interested in being with a man who risks his life every day. When the unexpected friendship with the sassy red head he used to hate turns into something Gus just doesn’t want to live without, he will do whatever it takes to have her. The hazards of his job as a detective for missing children may end up proving to be too much, but there’s a reason Aiden was brought into his life and nothing will stand in his way to keep her there.

Aiden Murphy used to hate the handsome jerk next door until a surprising discovery spun her world in another direction. Her life of devotion to her sister and niece has been her biggest strength with the exception of her art. That is, until Gus turns out to be the one thing that has been missing from that life all along. Aiden must decide if the unknown is worth the risk of loving the dedicated detective or if being pulled into his world is more than she can handle. When Gus becomes the only way for her to keep the people she loves most safe, will she understand why he treasures her untried strength or will she let her fear of the unknown decide for her?

For readers 18+ due to strong language and sexual situations.

Amy’s Review:

5 STARS!!!!!

Wow! I loved every minute of this amazing book. Gus is hot, sweet, sexy, and a smart ass. Reading about him and Aiden going back and forth at the beginning had me laughing so hard. I loved the banter and pranks between them. Aiden/Red is a smart and sassy firecracker. She’s quick on her comebacks and is perfect for Gus. Watching these two grow closer together even with a bump in the road was fun. I even teared up a few times. I loved these two. There was one part during the story that had my heart exploding and putting Gus above his brothers on my favorites list. He is absolutely amazing.

I love the Brannock family. They are awesome. When someone is in trouble they all come running without question. They hold their family above anything else and they welcome people with open arms. I can’t wait to read Protector to see what happens next.

I have to admit that the Epilogue killed me. Tears poured out of my eyes as I read it. And I don’t know why because believe me it wasn’t sad, but I have a soft spot in my heart for Liam.

Conall Brannock takes his job seriously. He doesn’t get attached, he doesn’t ask questions, and he protects his family at all costs. Nothing will change that. Not even the sweet, green eyed witness that just burst into his life and shifted his world. He has one job to do; protect Emily until she can testify. He can’t let his interest in her get in the way, but the more he finds out about her, the more he can’t help but wonder how the beautiful broken girl got into this mess in the first place. And the longer he takes to learn the truth, the deeper he falls for her.

Emily Dawson has a job to do. Stay off the grid, testify, and hopefully get her brother back. He’s all she has left of the family she struggled so hard to hold together and she would do anything to keep him safe. Even if it means she has put herself in harm’s way or that she has conned everyone into believing she saw something she didn’t. She knows where her loyalties lie, but her stoic yet gentle protector and his crazy family makes her question everything she once knew.

Loyalty can be one sided.
Family isn’t always blood.
And honesty can destroy everything she has come to love.

For readers 18+ due to strong language and sexual content.

Amy’s Review:

5 STARS!!!!!

Holy hell! Jessica Wilde is killing me with these men. Conned was more intense than Leverage and I wasn’t sure that was possible. I’m still loving the dad though. Lol.

Conall and Emily. I just finished reading this and I’m not sure I can get my thoughts together. I absolutely loved these two. Conall might possibly be better than Lucas from Leverage and I really thought no one would top him. But Conall definitely does. He has the same going for him as Lucas. Hot, sweet, smart, caring and good at his job. But there is just something about him that pulled me in so deeply into the book. I couldn’t stop reading. Couldn’t get enough of him.

Emily is a sweet girl who is just trying to look out for her brother. He gets her mixed up in some crazy shit and gets her to do things for him. Of course she’s smart and knows it’s wrong but wants to help her brother out. Her only family left. I really felt for her. I couldn’t imagine going through what she did. A lot of parts during this book ripped my heart out and a lot made me want to explode with happiness. My emotions will be out of wack for a while.

When these two finally come together I swear it was earth shattering. Of course the first thought I had was “Finally!” but it was so much more than that. I could feel the tension with these two. It was driving me nuts. Emily definitely has better self control because I would have jumped on him a lot sooner. Ha ha!

I have only ever had the urge to peak at the ending one other time before I started reading this series. With the first two it was a constant struggle with myself not to do it. Just to prepare myself for what would happen. There is so much suspense and mystery on top of the crazy emotions already going on. I am loving these Brannock men and am excited to see what will happen in the next book with Gus Gus.

This series is a MUST read!!!

Review: Leverage (The Brannock Siblings Book 1) by Jessica Wilde

Adventure. That’s all Aislinn ‘Ash’ Brannock wanted in her life. Her dad and two brothers – all cops – got to see it all, but their over-protectiveness made her feel like she had been locked away in a tower with three fire breathing dragons watching her every move. Yes, it was that bad. The only silver lining? Lucas Shade. Her brothers’ best friend growing up, and apparently the only man she will ever love because let’s face it, none of the others even come close. After an unfortunate mistake lands her back in her father’s home, her world is turned upside down and Lucas is there in a tightly wrapped package of serious with a big red bow on top. Life just got interesting, but it comes with a price, one she never wanted to pay.

Detective Lucas Shade never had a real family, but the Brannocks took him in as one of their own and he never took it for granted. Ash was a big reason for why he stuck around, but in order to save himself the beating of a lifetime from her two older brothers, he kept his feelings for her hidden. When the case he has been working on for months takes a turn, Ash could become the leverage the bad guys have been waiting for, but keeping her invisible may destroy everything Lucas has worked so hard for. Good thing Ash is the only person he would give up everything to protect.

For readers 18+ due to language and sexual situations.

Amy’s Review:

5 STARS!!!!!

The Brannock Siblings Series starts with a bang. In this first book we get Ash and Lucas. Two people who loved each other from childhood but could never act on it due to Ash’s overprotective brothers. Lucas is now a hot detective working for Ash’s dad, Liam, the Police Chief. I loved Ash because she wasn’t a whiny needy girl. She was real. She stepped up when needed and did what she had to do. Lucas will be one that’s hard to get over. He’s hot, sweet, smart, and really good at his job. I fell in love with him from the first time I got his POV. I love when I get to see in both characters minds and know how they each felt.

The one person that stole the book for me is the dad. William ‘Liam’ Brannock is amazing. Yeah I’m crushing on an older man. The way he is with Ash and the way he talks melted my heart. The brothers were fun to read about too and I can’t wait to see their story in the coming books.

You get a lot of mystery and action while reading. The suspense of what would happen next drove me nuts. I almost cried within the first five chapters and had to force myself not to peak at the ending to ease some of my worries.

Leverage will keep you engrossed and unable to put it down. An awesome beginning to a series that I can’t wait to finish.

Author Interview with Jessica Wilde

Profile Picture

~What are you currently working on?

The 4th book in the Brannock Siblings series, Protector. This will be the father and mother’s story and also a lot of updates on the present day with the siblings.

~Who is your favorite author?

Oh man that is a hard one. I have a lot of favorites but the ones that stick out to me and that I have read almost EVERY book from are Lila Rose, R.L. Mathewson, L.A. Fiore, JM Sevilla, Dorothy Keddington, Rebecca Yarros, Katy Regnery…. You know what? I have so many that I couldn’t list them all!  There are so many amazing authors out there both known and unknown.

~What writing advice do you have for aspiring authors?

Keep going. Don’t give up on it and always be open to new things. Step out of your comfort zone, not necessarily with topics to write about but with the social and networking part of it. Don’t be afraid to talk to people or ask for help or sign up for things you are terrified to do because once you do those things, you will open so many doors.

~Which of your characters is your Book Boyfriend? Why?

All of them haha!! Every single one of my heroes have a piece of my husband in them whether it is personality or looks. BUT if I had to choose only one, I would say Jack from Ricochet. He is so patient and strong and never gives up on Ari no matter what and he isn’t afraid to feel love for her. He opens himself up to it and that is what I consider a real man.

~Are you an organized author or scattered?

That depends on the day. Most of the time while I am writing, I am very organized, but if I spend a lot of time on other things then I can get a little scattered. I am a huge believer in sticky notes and marker boards and lists J I am trying to get more organized and things are looking really good.

~Do you plot out your story or write as it goes?

For the most part, I have a basic foundation and plot for a story. I know what is going to happen and who is going to be involved. Two of my books, Every One of Me and Leverage, came to me so quickly that I just started writing and the story flowed. I hadn’t been expecting either one of them and I assume that will happen a lot in the future.

~Which one of your characters is your absolute favorite? Why?

Jocelyn from Our Time. She is so strong and such a good mother and has the kind of outlook on life that is very important to have. Love is what makes the world turn and all of my characters realize that at some point but Jocelyn had it from the very beginning.

~Which one is your least favorite? Why?

Ellie from Every One of Me. If you read the book, you will understand why. I hated writing the scenes she was in because I always knew exactly how awful she was going to be. But she was very necessary.

~Do you have any strange writing habits?

I don’t know if it is strange, but I eat a lot of Fruit by the Foot while I write and Twizzlers. I am trying to cut back on the Peace Tea, but it seems to help with inspiration. HAHA! I also sometimes have ADD while I write. Something four chapters away will come to me and I will suddenly start writing that. It isn’t very often that I write completely linear. I also bring my husband in often just to talk because he reminds me what love should be like and that helps me with the Heroes and how they think.

10000-16000-19990-1600019990CF

~Do you have writers block and how do you work around it?

Occasionally I will have writer’s block but it usually doesn’t last too long. That is another situation where I will bring my husband in or go to him and just talk about anything. Halfway through our conversation, I almost always get some inspiration.

~Do you work on 1 story at a time or multiples?

I try to FOCUS on one story, mainly, but there are times where I am actively writing two or three. If I don’t, I will lose the ideas so I try to at least get them down so I can come back to them later and sometimes a scene will just HAVE to be written down no matter what book I am trying to finish.

~What is your favorite genre to read?

Romance obviously, but I LOVE historical romances/ highlander romances. Something about the way the characters fall in love and the situations they find themselves in fascinate me. Plus I love imagining the Scottish accents.

~What is the most wacky/crazy weird thing you received from a fan?

I haven’t really gotten anything crazy or weird from a fan, but I have been threatened with something crazy from a friend/blogger/fan! Chucky dolls and just plain dolls. I was scared of the mail for a while around Christmas.

big_thumb_4e8fc68fc21cc3c292388051de3d37d3

~If you could go back in time what is one thing you would tell your teenage self?

Don’t date so and so because he will end up being a douche bag.

~What are your favorite hobbies?

Reading and baking. I love baking anything and everything.

~Do you believe in love at first sight?

I do. I just think that people don’t realize it is love because it is so fast, but I believe a part of our souls recognize it.

~Name one of your pet peeves?

People who don’t know how to whisper!!

~If you were a genie, what wish would you absolutely not grant?

Making someone fall in love. It is so much better when it just happens.

~Favorite drink? Alcoholic or not.

My Peace Tea for sure. I drink way too much of that.

What’s the one thing you can’t live without?

My daughter. She is everything to me and I love her to pieces. She makes me so happy.  Also, my glasses/contacts. I am blind as a bat without them.

~If you could date a celebrity who would it be and why?

Gerard Butler. I have been in love with the man for years and I can’t get enough of his sexy accent and the curl of his lips when he talks. OMG! I think I would just give him stuff to talk about all day and sit and stare. Plus, you know, he seems like a cool guy.

Gerard-Butler-Wallpaper-closeup

~What is one thing no one knows about you?

I have the worst stage fright and I am really shy most of the time until I get to know someone.

~Favorite sport/sports team?

Hockey. But we never get a chance to watch it and we don’t watch any other sports.

~Do you have any hidden talents?

I play the piano. Started when I was 6 and taught lessons while I was in college. I also play the guitar but it has been years since I have gotten the chance to do either one.

~Most hated chore?

Dusting. It’s gross and it never goes away and I hate moving things to dust. Haha!

~Pick two celebrities to be your parents.

Will Smith and Jada Smith because they seem like the only ones with their heads still on their shoulders.

~Have you ever been in trouble with the police?

NEVER. I am a good girl 😉

~If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Either flying or moving things with my mind. And I wouldn’t tell ANYONE! I would just freak them out as much as I could.

~If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Arepitas with cheese and Platanos. They are Venezuelan dishes mostly. My mother is from Venezuela and these are the things me, my brothers, and sister would kill for most of the time.

~Do you have any nicknames?

I used to be called Wordo in Jr. High and High school because of my maiden name Worden.

~Do you like or dislike surprises? Why or why not?

I dislike KNOWING there is a surprise coming because then I feel on edge with the need to know. My husband loves, and I mean LOVES, to tell me he has a surprise for me for a gift or something and then torture me by not giving me hints or lying to me about what it might be. I can get very annoying with the questions so I don’t understand why he doesn’t just tell me! Or NOT tell me he has a surprise. If I don’t know about it, I like it.

~What’s your favorite fast food chain?

I don’t really like too much fast food, but Wendy’s is probably the one I would go to the most.

~If you had a warning label what would it say?

May be smiling or laughing for no reason at all, do not be alarmed.

~If you had to describe yourself as an animal, which one would it be?

I just took an animology quiz with a friend and apparently I am a tan giraffe!! And sort of a loner J My soulmate is also apparently a red jaguar.

~What is one thing you will never do again?

Date!!! If I lose my husband in any way, I don’t think I will ever try the dating ever again. What a pain in the ass and there are so many freaky people out there.

~What was your first job?

I was a lifeguard at a community pool and I loved every minute of it. I did it for a while and taught swimming lessons and trained new lifeguards too.

~Who is one person you would like to meet for coffee?

One of my readers who have been with me for a long time. There are several of them and I would love to just sit and talk with them.

~What is the best joke you’ve ever played on someone or had played on you?

Made fake cookies out of homemade Play-Doh (they looked awesome) and watched the person eat a whole one and say that they were really good because they were afraid to hurt my feelings. I almost peed my pants from laughing so hard.

Cookie+Dough+Play+Dough

~What is your favorite TV show?

The Walking Dead. I love zombie shows! I also love Outlander and The Big Bang Theory.

~Do you like to go out or stay home?

A little bit of each. One or the other all the time gets old.

~What is your favorite movie?

Always has been and will forever be Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and I don’t even own it HAHA! But it is the best!

~What is your preferred method to violently kill someone (in your book, of course)?

Poison… I haven’t done it yet, but a future book will definitely have it.

~Are you a Tom boy or a girly girl?

Tom boy during the day, girly girl at night.

~Do you take the “personality” quizzes, like on Buzzfeed/Facebook?

Nope. That animology one was my first.

~What is your favorite holiday?

Halloween because I love candy and it gives me an excuse to by a five pound bag.

~What is your favorite/ go to cuss word?

Shitballs. It works for almost everything and makes some people laugh.

~Do you have any piercings/tattoos? If so where?

I have a belly button piercing and it is my favorite!!!

~Do you like tattooed bad boys or sweet good guys?

Both! I love READING about both. In real life, I like a mixture of both as long as he isn’t an asshole.

~Favorite quote?

This one from Ricochet by Ernest Hemingway “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, many are strong at the broken places.”

~What is one of your phobias?

I only have 2. Dolls and moths. The doll one is understandable for most people. The moths… don’t ask and walk away if you are with me and see any or you might get hurt.

“Arianna West, you listen closely. Jack Garrett moved to this town several years ago. He showed up with his wonderful family and made a mark on this town. Of course he did. I mean, the Garretts are the perfect example of perfection. Doctor dad, social butterfly artist for a mom. And Amanda? Well, she’s Amanda. Everyone falls in love with her five seconds after meeting her. But Jack. God, Ari. Jack made a mark that will never go away. He showed up, broody, mysterious, and gorgeous and everyone wanted to find out what made him tick.”

“Why are you telling me this?” I cried, not wanting to know how easy it was for Jack to move on after he left us.

“Just shut up and listen to me. It didn’t take long to realize that Jack didn’t want to be here. That he had left a part of himself behind. He dated and the women flocked to him, believe me, but not one of them turned into anything more than a fling. And you know what? Every single one of them knew exactly why.”

“Why?”

“When he first came to this town, he did nothing but talk about you. Ari, the beautiful sister of his best friend that he had to leave behind. She was too good for the life he could possibly give her after being involved in the shit he was in. She was the very idea of perfection to him and he never even tried to move on.”

“Why?” I asked on a whisper, not even sure I wanted to hear the answer.

“Because he can’t stop loving you. Because that kind of love is impossible to forget. It’s impossible to even put into words, sweetie. These books and movies try so hard and they come close, but never will they truly make the heart understand that kind of devotion, the kind of power that it can wield. Seeing Jack look at you, seeing the way he longs for you, Ari? That’s the kind of love that makes the world keep turning. The kind of bulletproof love that nothing and no one can stop, not even the girl who is shattered to the point where she thinks she could never heal again. Jack doesn’t care how many pieces you are in, my beautiful broken friend. He just wants to make sure he has them all in his hands.”

Synopsis

Fear.

It’s the last thing I remembered.

I was afraid.

Afraid to fight, afraid to run… afraid to breathe.

Then, everything had gone dark. As if life was finally hearing my pleas, my cries to end the torment. To end the fear.

But even in the dark, I still felt it.

I always felt it.

My life had been a ricochet of one event leading to the next. Bouncing back and forth from good to bad. Happiness to despair. Hope to fear.

My name is Arianna West. I’m stronger now. Steady. Alive.

I can find a way to survive on my own. I can see what is coming for me. I can channel my fear into strength.

Except… I didn’t see Jack.

And Jack changed everything.

For readers 18+ due to language, violence, and sexual content.

Excerpt

I laughed. A laugh so deep that the muscles in my abdomen flexed. How long had it been since I had felt that? Too long. I hadn’t really laughed in a long time and something so simple had brought it out of me.

Jack had brought it out of me.

“God, I missed that laugh,” Jack whispered.

I went silent, so suddenly that my breath couldn’t keep up and it came rushing out with the emotion that had been built up inside of me.

Tears immediately sprang to my eyes and the heaviness in my chest was back.

My life had changed so much. Everything had changed.

“Jack…”

“Ari, please don’t cry.”

He had turned his body towards me and was holding my face in his hands. The tears running down my cheeks didn’t make it far. He wiped each one away.

He saw the moment my control slipped and I just couldn’t seem to stop the tears. That’s when he pulled me into his arms. Arms that had always made everything better. Strong fingers combed through my hair, down my temple, across my jaw, then retraced their way back up and into my hair once more. He was giving me whatever comfort he could while I sobbed on his chest.

I should have been embarrassed about the quick change in my mood. I should have felt ridiculous. Childish. With Jack, though, I never had to worry about being anyone but myself no matter who I was now.

“So much is gone,” I said in a broken and weak voice. “So much is missing from me.”

“No, Ari. You’re still in there, babe, just a little harder to reach.”

I shook my head. In denial? I wasn’t sure. He was only half right.

“I’ve bent too far for too long. I’m broken,” I whispered. So much regret came pouring out of me and I couldn’t control it.

I had been slowly breaking for three years and my determination to move on was waning much faster than I could ever keep up with.

Jack buried his fingers in my hair and I felt the press of his lips on the top of my head. When he spoke, the tone of his voice sounded defeated. Resigned. “The world breaks everyone, and afterward, many are strong at the broken places.”

I sniffed as the rumble in his chest vibrated against my cheek. His shirt was wet from my tears and I knew I looked like a mess, but I looked up at him anyway.

“What is that from?” I asked.

“What? You don’t think I could come up with something so profound by myself?” he teased.

“I know damn well you could, Jack.”

He looked at me for a moment, his eyes searching mine and his fingers sweeping a lock of hair back behind my ear. If I didn’t know any better, I would think he was reading my mind, seeing all my secrets, all my broken places. “It’s Ernest Hemingway. He said that.”

“Do you believe it?”

“I do. So much so that I tattooed it on my shoulder the first chance I got,” he mumbled with a short chuckle.

I glanced down at his shoulder. It was too dark to see much of anything, but the moonlight streaming in the window showed enough when he lifted his shirt sleeve. The words were there, permanently inked into his skin just above a complex shape that I couldn’t quite make out.

Review

5 STARS!!!!!

It’s so hard to explain how I felt about this book. It was amazing but it’s more than that. I don’t have words to describe it. I was engrossed in this book from the very first word. It sucked me in and kept me reading for hours. Life stopped for me but came to life for Arianna and Jack. My heart hurt for half the book and exploded with hope and love for the other half. Arianna’s story is so tragic. It’s a situation that is really hard to write about but Jessica Wilde did an amazing job to bring forth the emotions of a person in that situation. Arianna is amazingly strong. She set forth to restart her life even after her ex found her again. She wasn’t going to let anyone stop her from starting over. I loved Jack from the first moment he entered the book. Sweet, caring, lovable, and HOT!…. It was great to see him there taking care of Arianna, never giving up with the hope that one day she would come around. I love to see big macho men showing a sweeter and softer side. It makes me love them even more.

Jack and Arianna are a perfect love story. A love from long ago showing up in your life years later. There to help you with the hard parts of life and showing you how much you are truly loved. Giving you the strength to try again and to move on. This is seriously a must read book.

About The Author

5 Stars++++

This was my first Jessica Wilde book. I was absolutely amazed by this book. It deserves way more than 5 stars. I never would have thought someone could take a story about a person with multiple personalities and turn it into the sweetest, most heart wrenching love story I’ve ever read.

Poor Tess has had a hard life. Having what she thought was blackouts growing up to later learn she had other personalities within her. She spent five long years away from her family before finally returning. She didn’t just leave her family when she left but also Charlie. The love of her life that also loved her, though she didn’t know it. Charlie has won the Best Man award. Not many men would stick around and do what he did. This was true love through and through. The struggles he went through to keep her near, never giving up, because he loved her that much. One of the best love stories for 2014.
